Just curious, for those of you who have done your first oil change, what mileage did you do it at? I'm currently around 1500 miles. I'm considering doing it between 2500-3000 miles. I drove my car very hard for the first 1000 miles for break in.

I am at 2600 and I think it is time to change it. Did you do your own change?

Going to change mine at the regular change interval. What is it? 7500, 10000?

I've always done the same thing on every car I've owned, never had any problems engine wise with any of them.

I haven't done mine yet. I'll likely be doing it at 2500.

Normal OCI is 10k.

I will likely change the oil when the service indicator tells me, which I expect to be around 6k. I want to give the factory fill additives a chance to work first.

New motors should always do the first oil change at 1000-1500 miles when most of the simple wear and break-in material can be disposed of. Then every 3000 thereafter. That is the key to the best performance and engine longevity.

Most important is to use a synthetic that will not cause detonation.

Huh? I see words, but very little of this makes any sense...

This should give everyone a better understanding that don't already know.

When an engine is in the break-in period and all the parts begin to move together is the most critical state. This is when the engine is finishing up the honing process begun by the original engine machining. As parts move together for the first few hundred miles, especially the piston rings in the cylinder bore, they scrub off small pieces of metal that are carried away by the oil. All of these small pieces created by your engine during break-in are very bad for it. This is why the break-in process should be completed as quickly as possible allowing you to change the oil and filter to flush out all the contaminants right away. When you allow the break-in oil to go too many miles it Is contaminated and now spreads all the filings and small pieces through all the oil passageways.

This is the reason you want to try to change break-in oil in the first 1000-1500 miles or less. Most people don’t agree because they are uneducated about proper new engine maintenance or they are being lazy or don’t want to spend the money. If they only knew the benefits they would line up. For non-performance motors you can get away with longer break-in mileage. The Ecoboost Mustang is a new little Performance Dynamo and will push the envelope with Boost, Cylinder Pressure and Spark Curves. That is why it’s vital to treat it properly. Not just some crappy 4 banger setup.

Detonation is caused by abnormal combustion from high heat, pressure in the combustion chamber. This is when the fuel ignites spontaneously causing a rise in cylinder pressure. The result is like a hammer hitting the piston producing the knocking or pinging noise. This is what combustible oil does when it gets into the combustion chamber and over time will crack rings, destroy pistons and even cause holes in the tops of pistons or blow head gaskets. This is one of the most important reasons to run a good synthetic oil that will not lower the octane rating if it gets by the rings or sucked in through the PCV system.

I just wanted to make it easier to understand and why manufacturer’s using less combustible detergents in some synthetic oils will help prevent and even eliminate detonation from oil. We already have too many variables to deal with that can hurt our engines. So reducing them at every opportunity is always the best solution.

With today's advances in metallurgy, I really don't think you have as much break in contaminants as you did before. Engines run much tighter tolerances today as well.

What is Ford's suggested first oil change interval?

Ford says 5,000 miles / 8,000 km for the 1st one.

When I was an apprentice back in the dark days, :D , we changed the 1st one at 1,000 km's in Germany. BTW. It is not a bad think to do. You don't harm the engine if you do it.

On the other part. I have no idea what he is talking about, because the car engines are "detonation engines". Small parts of the oil always passes the piston rings. That's the nature of this engines.
