Different ones for different reasons.

My first car (bought it when I was 14 with my own money - it was pile) 67 SS Chevelle. When I found it was an UGLY green (repaint) and filled with unread newspapers (long story) and had a 3 on the tree and a 6 cylinder. Owned by an elderly woman. Everyone asked, she would never sell. Rode up one day on my bike - asked her about the car - she sold it to me. $550. Started working on it. Pulled the carpet one day to see a homemade metal piece covering over the factory 4 speed hole. Got a phone a call several months after buying it. The owner's nephew told me he had a bunch of "old parts" for the car if I wanted 'em. Original 396 / 4 speed was among those parts. He told me the story on the car. The owner was originally the woman's husband. He ordered it brand new - to race. No power steering, no power brakes, ZERO options (heater and radio delete car). Raced it for awhile. Early 70s, oil embargo, gas prices...he worked at a dealership and swapped in a 6 cylinder / 3 speed combo from a low mile wrecked car, painted it and his wife drove it for years. First engine was a home built 327 ( I was young and broke - but it ran good until building an engine from mostly used parts caught up with me). Then the original 396. Then a modified marine 502 (warranty core return that had a bad bearing on fire up). Sold it before I joined the Army. It was a GOOD chunk of money back then. Saw one configured just like mine go for enough money at an auction to make me cry years later. Still miss that car and will have another '67 before I kick the bucket.

1985 IROC. Laugh all you want. 3rd Gen F-bodies can be made to handle like nobodies business for not a lot of cash. Swapped the slushbox 700R4 for one of several T5s. Ended up with a 408 with tweaked TPI setup. Ran out of steam before 6K - but my god the low to mid range in that car was insanely fun as a daily driver. Drove it to a local car show with my then YOUNG son to look at other cars. This kid asked me how much, I gave him a ridiculous number and my email address. Two weeks later it was gone.

1971/72 (it was a combination of two different trucks) K5 Blazer. Former State Forestry truck. Swapped in a mild 454 - 4 speed granny gear. LOTS of lift and 38-40" tires depending. Never got stuck, never let me down. Nothing like idling down the Myrtle Beach strip (in 1st) without having to touch the brake or gas when cruising. Ugly old thing - but everybody loved it, including me.

Jeez - the thought of how much many of my former vehicles are worth now is depressing.

2000 Escort ZX2 S/R in Zinc Yellow. Car handled amazingly and while it wasn't fast it was a TON of fun to toss into corners. It was also the car I learned how to drive manual and do engine and ECU tuning on. Also, the car that I learned that no matter what I want to do with a car, handling is always first.

Well, when I was 18 I bought a modded 1970 Plymouth Daylight Super Sport with a 440 Magnum, high rise manifold with two Holly 850 Double Pumper, aluminum heads, N50 rear tires, Man did I have good times in that. I got my only Excessive speed ticket only because the cop only heard me drag racing, never seen me

Has anyone noticed how small the current Mustang is compared to most of the cars they have fond memories of?

Than other cars, yeah. But Mustangs have always been smaller than traditional muscle cars.

The Mustang's current wheelbase is within an inch of the originals. Most other dimensions ought to pretty much be comparable.

The Fox/SN95 chassis was significantly shorter.

I saw a 47 Ford convertible for sale at a car meet. I was on foot at the time and thought this would be a nice little car to have. At the end of the day, I drove over to where this car was parked and pulled next to it with my GT. That 47 Ford was like a foot longer and just as wide. It was huge!

I went to a ford car show last month that was mostly mustangs, mostly s550s with some Fox and SN95s. after seeing all the s550s and then walking up to a fox, you really notice the difference. the engine bay too. fitting in a 60 degree vs 90 degree engine too.

This just reminded me of a story with my 1996 Trans Am. I had a tune up done on it and the car was running like shit. I brought it to the dealer who did it and every tech who looked at it and scanned it couldn't figure out what was wrong. The head guy there told me to bring it back at midnight so his 18 year old prodigy mechanic could look at it. The kid pops the hood and immediatly saw that two of the spark plug wires were crossed. The firing order for a Chevy 350 has never changed and all these mechanics didn't even see it. But the 18 year old did.
