Since the plates are on file I only have one (we have 5 cars). Works just fine.
Did some research on iPass from illinois

If your vehicle is registered to the account and your account is in good standing, the toll will automatically be deducted from your account as a Video Toll (Vtoll). Vehicles registered to an I-PASS account cannot pay unpaid tolls online. Please note that excessive Vtolls will result in penalties.

I may be getting letters as I go through 6-10 tolls a day...this explains it

Not sure if having a business account makes a difference.

I'm in illinois also and dont have the physical pass in my car but it still works like normal without it because the car is registered
Don't know how that works, but EZPass is registered to the tag (which is tied to a credit card), not the license plate. You can shuffle tags around cars if you want. Seems silly to send you a bill to your car registration adress every time you cross a bridge.

For our business account we had to give them all makes and model but were told that we only needed one unit. It's worked great so far - all the cars (the other 4) go through the tunnels and only the main account is charged.

Maybe EZ Pass is different than iPass. Who knew...huh
Yeah, I think so. Not sure how iPass works, but EZ Pass works with an RFID transponder in the EZPass tag that communicates with the RFID reader in the toll booth. Maybe you guys have RFID transponders embedded in your license plates?

Or like in Fla they just take a pic of the plate and bill it against your SunPass/EZPass account.

iPass is same but as a backup the cameras can scan the plates also and charge accounts for the people who don't keep their iPass in the car.

The only people who have a transponder on the their plates are for certain vehicles where the front windshield causes an issue with the transponder...Mercedes has this and I think a couple other manufactures

I plastidip mine black to make it less noticeable and put it behind the rear view mirror using black velcro. I have the slim design one that they use for motorcycles in IL....I think its what they use for cars now but back when I got it the motorcycle one was the smallest one.
I went the same way about it. Can't say I pay attention to it anymore. Also, can't see it from outside which is a bigger plus for me.

They take pics on the bridges here in CA too and if you are registered they just bill you like you went over the bridge with the transponder. I've had a couple units have the batteries die or get weak enough not to work over the years.

Where you have to have the transponder with you is in the HOV lanes that have the Pay access. These lanes let you pay a fee to drive in the HOV lane with fewer than the listed minimum number of occupants.

Quick question, if I have the EZPASS but don't have a front license plate (sto-n-sho on backorder) in a state where it is required, will I have trouble using the EZPASS lanes?

I can only speak for Fla where we don't have front plates, but they only take a pic of the rear of cars that don't register on the EZPass sensors. If they used the front plate they have to take pics of all cars and have the software drop those that paid. (I know some states do both to get an image of the driver - but that's usually speed/red light cameras)

In NYC the camera takes pictures of the rear plate. However, they MTA PD might pull you to the side.
