Yeah, the car is quick, but damn…
Was doing mid-80’s, listening to some Godsmack, and the rear window went boom and completely shattered. Collapsed as soon as I stopped. Nothing impacted, just shattered.

Wow, that had to have been shocking when it happened! Unfortunately, spontaneous shattering of tempered glass is a thing. Google it. It even has its own Wikipedia entry. Most sources indicate either a defect or some sort of existing damage as a contributing factor. Hopefully insurance covers it the same as a shattered/cracked front windshield.

If the panel is installed under tension due to poor fitment or the glass has a flaw, this unfortunately can happen.

This happened to my buddies large sunroof while driving home from work. Fortunately he had the visor covering it when it happened.

It will be very interesting to hear what your dealer has to say about this. I do not recall reading about this happening to a S550 before. At least on this forum.

They'll accuse him of rock crawling with it, which tweaked the unibody and broke the window. Then they'll try to sell him an F-150 to rock crawl with. Then his sunroof will shatter. It'll be a vicious circle.

No shot; actually had that happen years back in a G35 coupe (hit the frame just past the rear quarter window... amateur just didn't know how to lead the shot), that one was extremely loud.
This was just a spontaneous shatter; loud and weird.
and it doesn't matter how much you vacuum, you still find glass

I'll be in contact with the dealer today to press for warranty reimbursement; had to be a defect in either the glass or install.
I was very fortunate in that A1 Glass out of Colton had one available and was out to me in less than an hour.

Good catch CJ. I missed this one. Warrantied due to a defective defroster. OK, I’ll go with that.
Gotta be some defect so I'll press for warranty; worst they can say is no.

I had this happen in my old 93 Chevy C1500 Truck. Was driving to the Gym and the back glass just Popped with a loud POP.
Did kind a surprised me. I didn't know if someone was shooting or what.
It was a 100 degree day, so that could of had some effect.
Just weird when it happens and the why!
