I too have had Mustang's all my life and I can tell you that they don't make them with the same quality they used to.
The thing with new cars these days is that they're loaded with a whole bunch of other stuff/features/electronics etc. The more a car has loaded inside the more of a chance for something to break. Back then cars had barely anything inside and less of a chance to break. Just saying.

good lord

They called me today to tell me they can't reinstall my catch can because it could void the warranty. They asked if I still had the original hose so they could attach it! They're going to order the OEM intake hose and give me my catch can to reinstall. They didn't give me an update

Ridiculous
Yes that is crazy a catch can:eyebulge: Did you get a new short block or long block? here`s a pic of part# for short block, our noise was in the piston area with no oil contamination so it was a short block. They only install new engines because no rebuilds available yet for 2015 and up.Fresh engine build date 02/10/17

True...but Mustangs weren't making 425 from the factory and capable of doubling the hp either.
I was referring to fitment of the body panels and the quality of the paint etc, true they weren't making 435 hp but they didn't weight 4000 lbs either. As I remember it that 225 hp got the job done every time, I ran a stock 5.0 bottom end with a B303 cam, GT 40 heads, GT 40 intake, 10 psi & 150 shot never skipped a beat.

Just got off the phone. They said I had a piston go crazy which destroyed everything. They put a new long block in, I might be able to take it home today.

He swore up and down that I do not need a catch can and highly recommended against it unless I was going to supercharge or add a turbo. He said that could have been the cause but they cant determine it.

He said they have NEVER seen a 5.0 catastrophic failure this bad. Keep in mind these guys deal with Beefcake racing. They've seen some shit

What should I do? Should I be worried about this? Should I just go for an extended warranty?

The job of the catch can is to prevent blow by oil from being sucked back through the intake manifold which lowers your octane rating and causes detonation. Back in 2000 the Lightning pick up had this issue, but it was supercharged so octane was very important being that your car was NA it's not as critical. If you don't have any plans to go forced induction I would leave it stock and retain your warranty of the new engine.

That isn't true. Tunes don't just make random things break. If it's a defective part then they have to cover it. Having a tune might make it a harder process during the tear down, etc but they can't make him cover it if it was a manufacturing defect unless they can prove his tune caused it, or whatever other part he put on it.
Ohhh but they do. There are so many parameters in a tune which if done incorrectly will destroy your engine. Plus a tune affects everything from the engine all the way through the rear end. So they can easily say that the extra power from the tune caused X part to fail as it wasn't rated for that...and they very well would be in the right with that.

No proper company would ever warranty an engine that has been tuned. Who knows what they have done to it and how could it have affected the engine. Would you as an engine manufacturer drop 10k on an engine replacement after some random tuner through in some random parameters at the PCM and some random driver did god knows what with that? My guess is no.

While he's right in that you don't NEED it, doesn't mean that it won't help. The only way for a catch-can to do something like that was if the internal baffles or whatever broke off and a small piece of metal got sucked into a chamber. But you can easily look at the condition of the can itself to see if it's all there. Other than that, it just sounds like bad luck. Anything can happen at any time, I've seen catastrophic engine failures while idling. And my guess is that tech has not seen EVERY SINGLE broken 5.0 ever...so you can't base your entire knowledge of 5.0 reliability on one dude.

I would say take the new longblock, ask for an extended warranty for your troubles and move on with your life. These are still stout engines. This is not the same as taking a car after a bad accident. Yes some body parts might not fit right, or if there was frame damage/bending the car may never drive the same again...but that's not the case with an engine. An engine is an engine, so if the new longblock is properly installed and put together it will run the same as your car and you would never know it had a new engine in it.

What about the value of my car? I'm almost certain it's been affected

So much misinformation here it's laughable.

Can't imagine that it's affected (unlike an accident). A car with a new engine is not going to be worth less than one with an old engine. In fact, it may be for the better as it has lower miles. Like I said before, a fixed engine is not going to adversely affect the car drives unlike a salvaged car that has had frame and body damage.

Won't be done until tomorrow, still need to call Ford first and work out the warranty. I curbed my rim during this whole ordeal, hoping they'll throw one in.

Got the car back today, I'll scan the paper work tomorrow.

Guess what? It was cylinder #8 failure. Piston went straight through the block

Wow. So embarrassing to have an engine rebuild at 5k miles. They say the coyotes are bullet proof.. Dont know about that anymore..glad you got it fixed..
