It may be normal, but as I mentioned in the other rattle oasis thread, my rattle is now gone. Maybe it just happened by itself, but since I read engine break in threads, I changed the way I warm up and drive the car. Ever since, rattle is gone.
Can you link the engine break in threads you're referencing?

Sorry for not reading through ten pages, I don't know if this has already been posted. It's normal.

SM 45738 - Some 2016 GT350 Mustangs Might Exhibit Piston Rattle From Idle To 3000 RPM 4-11-2016
Some 2016 Mustang GT350 equipped with the 5.2L engine may exhibit a rattle or rapping type sound during cold operation at light loads and speeds from Idle - 3000 RPM. The noise will be most noticeable during light acceleration in the 1500-3000 RPM range and may also be noticeable in the 800-1200 RPM range with neutral throttle blips. This sound is caused by the piston motion in the cylinder bore. This is an inherent characteristic of the forged aluminum pistons utilized in this high performance engine. Once the engine reaches operating temperature the noise will diminish, although it may still be noticeable even when fully warm. There are no durability concerns with this sound.

2016 CAR: ZG MUSTANG (S550)
2016 CAR: 00071 MUSTANG

I know there's a piston slap poll already - but this thread was older and I had lost it until recently. Since I've posted last in this thread, I've taken delivery of my R and it too, has piston slap - which according to the Ford bulletin above, is normal.

Mine does diminish when warm but can still hear it driving around. If I am driving spiritedly, getting on it for longer periods and getting the motor a little hotter, it pretty much goes away 100%. This fits piston slap to a T - as the additional heat causes the piston to grow slightly in the bore, decreasing the rocking/slapping of the piston. They cant set them up this tight when cold because the piston would stick when it eventually expanded during operation.

Just a conclusion for me in this thread. I don't really like the sound but I'll roll with it for now.

Some people say they don't. The issue is - I've built a similar motor (piston-wise) and I know the alloy Mahle uses in these pistons does grow but actually grows very little compared to some other alloys... the PTW clearance is VERY tight. I want to say .0035...been a while. If some of them start so tight that they don't have the sound when cold - I cant imagine how tight it is at OT and at 8250rpm. I've only heard a few in person and they've all had it so far. I'll let you know if I find one that doesn't :)

I see this thread has died a little with no updates. Did you guys find anything? I also have this issue. I can too add how ANNOYING this is. It really drowns out the engine and makes it sound awful. I recorded several videos to try and capture but trust me it's more annoying in person. I took mine to the dealer and the couldn't hear it. I told them they have to take it out and really run it. They ran down the street and hit the gas. Sigh. Really frustrating. The videos are located here.

I have almost 19,000 miles on my car and the noise is still there. I gave up once I read that it was piston rattle.

Yeah, annoying... just keep your foot on the throttle harder!
It goes away then...

FWIW,
Kirby

My car makes it cold or hot and has since new.
It does lessen in intensity once it warms up though...

yeah yours sounds like how they describe piston slap how it lessens as it gets warm. mine is the total opposite. it gets much worse.

I can't ignore it. It's too damn annoying. Especially when not driving on the highway and windows down.

@funkbrotherj - For once, I'm going to say that is NOT piston slap as we are describing it in this thread. I'd take that to the dealer RIGHT away - and remove those youtube videos (although you're not doing anything wrong, dealers are crap sometimes).

If this is your car idling - this is NOT normal:

Holy, my Shelby does not sound anything close to that at idle. I would have the car towed to the dealer, no way would I drive it like that.

Mine has it, I think they all do. It's not annoying...it sounds like contacts on old cycles..or tappets. Can not hear mine at all at idle. I hear it from around 2200 to around 2750 RPM. I usually keep the motor around 3,000 so the only time I hear it is when I'm climbing thru that RPM range. My car hasn't gotten hotter than 203 engine oil temp but I've only ran it at around 65 degrees outside. My oil pressure runs at around 85 to 90 psi at around 3500 RPM, oil temp around 195.
