Here is a link to a video I posted in the GT350 group for Facebook.
https://www.facebook.com/chad.eubanks/videos/10156794165287565/
The video was taken after a quick trip to a local store. Max drive time was a total of 10min.

Super bummed right now. I've been back and forth with multiple dealers in my area. Conversation goes along the lines of 'The engine should not make that sound. You will most like need a replacement'. Or ''That is definitely not normal'. Once the service centers have the car for a day or longer, I receive a call and statement of 'Ford considers that normal'.

Ultimately, the symptoms fall under SSM 46173 "Some 2016-2017 Mustang GT350 equipped with the 5.2L engine may exhibit a rattle or rapping type sound during cold operation at light loads and speeds from Idle - 3000 RPM. The noise will be most noticeable during light acceleration in the 1500-3000 RPM range and may also be noticeable in the 800-1200 RPM range with neutral throttle blips. This sound is caused by the piston motion in the cylinder bore. This is an inherent characteristic of the forged aluminum pistons utilized in this high performance engine. Once the engine reaches operating temperature the noise will diminish, although it may still be noticeable even when fully warm. There are no durability concerns with this sound.".

I love the car but no longer have confidence in the engine or Ford customer service. Hoping by posting this will help ease my concerns by confirming the issue is not normal or that I am overreacting.

what the bulletin is describing is piston slap but what your have does not sound like piston slap to me. I'm not a 5.2 expert but a wild guess on my part it is related to the timing chains/tensioner area. Is one of the dealers the selling dealer? Can you get a factory Ford representative to come to the dealer by contacting Ford directly. In the video it sounded like the noise occurs when you back off the throttle as opposed to the bulletin which is stating the noise is under acceleration.

I ordered the car from a TX dealership. We've been in contact of the last 2 weeks about the issue and are still in conversation at the moment. As for the two local dealerships: one has me going through an oil consumption test. And are trying to qualify me for a new engine based on the results of said test. The other pulled the oil filter out and opened it up. They were looking for metal shards. However, that was with a fresh oil change and about 10 miles max on the car after the oil change. Nothing was found. From what I've been told by the local dealerships is there isn't a way to request a factory rep rather I will need to figure out a reps schedule and hopefully catch them.

That is definitely not normal, and is definitely not piston slap.

Like they’ve said, not normal, not piston slap. Oil levels are good? I would NOT start it again and have it flatbedded to a Ford Dealer who has experience with the GT350. I would not accept the car back with it sounding like that. Go to corporate if need be. Call Ford Performance...not normal, not piston slap.

You’ve kept the documentation so far? They let you drive out sounding like that? Outrageous IMHO.

Agreed...that is not normal. Something is afoot with the cam timing chain or phasers.

Thanks hack. Trying to not give up. There isn't another car out there that I would want. Its been hard though. My wife thinks it is unsafe, won't ride in it and strongly opposes me tracking it. Even though I order it w/ the track pack and had full intent of tracking it. I have yet to do so. I started to look at a new X2 for her. But I am torn. Only in my wildest dreams did I think about owning an amazing track car such as the GT350 and to own one now but to deal with this is a huge let down. All that I've ever owned is Mustangs. They are my favorite car ever.

I check the oil religiously. Oil levels are always correct before leaving my house and always have extra with me. I have noticed, as many have as well, aggressive oil consumption. I agree to a point that the car consumes oil and expect it would. However, mine did fall under the Oil Cooler Line recall. Despite mentioning the recall on the car multiple times to multiple dealerships (I moved a bit), getting one to order the part and install it took longer than expected. Unsure if that is the ultimate cause of this issue.

All repairs / work done to the car was by Ford. I have all documentation. I've Called corporate and had a case number escalated. Despite being led to believe a new engine will likely be the solution, the final say was 'normal sound'. The sound was reproduced at that service center as well.

I spoke to Ford Performance this am and have been emailing a representative. He asked if I removed the smog pulley or made tensioner changes. Both are a no. He asked if I could try removing the belt and reproduce the sound. Unfortunately, the sound is intermittent and I could not reproduce it this morning. I have not been driving the car since I received it back from the last service center.

Great you’ve checked the oil, escalated the situation, kept documentation. I didn’t realize it was an intermittent issue, apologies for the oversight. Not a good situation to be in. You might want to ask folks here in the forum of a trusted service department in your area. Seems like a stretch to go from “you’ll need a replacement motor” to that’s a normal sound, I’ve had mine since Dec ‘15 and never heard what you’ve posted. Hack is correct- don’t give up..

Had to do a double take on your location because I ran into a 2016 Mag GT350 with TP at the Sunnyvale dealership that showed me a video with a similar sound to yours. Definitely did not sound normal, and my own GT350 has never made that sound. He told me the dealership said it didn't sound normal, but Corporate said it was, which is absolute BS.

I sympathize with you on not wanting another car besides this. If it came down to it and I had to get rid of the car, I'd probably buy a 4 banger Camry. That's how uninterested I am in the regular Mustangs/Camaros, not to take away from them but the engine and 8250RPM was by far the biggest selling point.

If it isn't resolved properly, aside from selling it, I suggest you make full use of the time you still have left on the 5yr/60k powertrain warranty.
