Random engine shutdown

Same here.... just a random shutdown on my car as I was coming to a stop. I have a stock 15 mustang so it had nothing to do with any mods!! It only happened once (so far). I will be keeping my eye out for more issues like this with others. It is a first year design!? Hopefully we are not looking at a latent design issue of sorts!?!?

Something very similar happened to me a few weeks ago. I was coming up to a red light to make a right turn into a shopping center (uphill street). Put it in neutral and then 2nd as I was making the turn. Stepped on the gas and nothing happened. It felt as if the car ran out of gas. Looked at the instrument panel and saw the RPM at 0 and a message stating 'Run Power Active'. Since I was going slow and turned onto an uphill street the car came to a stop. Started it back up and went about my way. Checked the battery cables afterwards and everything seemed fine. Has not reoccurred so far.

Main difference is that my car is completely stock at the moment.

I had over 500 problem free miles and started after the BAMA tune. I haven't experienced it lately but maybe it can have something to do with the "Automatic Engine Shutdown" that came from factory. From what the manual said (page 123), the engine will shut down and will give a 30 second warning/timer before it does if your engine has been idling for an extended period of time. I didn't get any warning, it just dies. This feature can be overridden but resets at every start up.

I've contacted Ford Service about this so let's see what they have to say. I could see the new technology with the push button start and key detection system where it could be glitchy and not detecting the keys properly or some bug in the ECU program. I just hope that it is something that can be taken care off. Unless we all got a faulty crank sensor lol. I just hope this is something that can be addressed quickly.

I've seen that come up before but I was able to stop that from happening since I was sitting in the car and I was idling for a little while. However, that message never appeared (and I never left the car idling) when my car shut off for the first time since I just took the exit off from a 40 min highway cruise lol. I'm guessing it could be a crank sensor issue since the clutch was pressed down and the car was coasting when it shut off. At least majority of the people were doing the same thing.

Yep sounds like a crank sensor but these cars are so technical it could be a few things. If not tuned i would take it too the dealer.Hell even if tuned i would take it !!!!!.

One of our members (Nanashii) in this thread has taken their stock vehicle to the dealer. Unfortunately, after running their tests they didn't find anything wrong with the car. Post #28 states Nanashii 's results from the dealer.

I think a faulty crank sensor would produce symptoms more than once in 3000 miles (my case). I spoke with Ford Service (Rachel) and that's how I ended up going to the dealer. I am going to point Rachel to this thread and see if she can pass it on to someone on the technical side.

Thanks Nanashii and Demon Coyote for the heads up via PM. Has anyone been to their dealer yet for the concern? If so, please send me a PM with a diagnosis.
If you haven't seen a dealer yet and are experiencing the issue, please PM your VIN, name, phone number, and some details. I'll document the product feedback in our internal system. This feedback is how Ford determines areas of widespread customer concern for future recalls and customer satisfaction programs.

No not necessarily crank and cam sensors can be very random and very hard to diagnose,if dont have experience with a lab or ossilscope u will never find the glitch.U have to use a scope to test these when random problems occur.

Ok, here another member with this issue. Completely stock, no tune with only tinted windows and a new shift knob. Absolutely nothing done to the engine, exhaust or tune. Car has right at 4200 miles on it.
Just happened to me today for the first time. Cranked up the car to leave work, was running fine. After about a half mile I was approaching a red light, and as others have posted, pressed in the clutch, slipped it in neutral and it just died. Also had the "Run Power On" on the dash. No CEL. Bumped the start button and it fired right up.
Now here's where it gets weird. Temps outside were mid 80's. (Car was still cold engine wise and I had the A/C on full blast when it died.)
Screen readout said it was 70 degrees outside. I knew damned good and well it was hotter than that. And as I was driving, (city traffic) I would shift at or around 2000 RPM. When I pressed in the clutch to shift the RPM's would jump about 1000 RPM's until I let the clutch out. This occurred about three or four times out of ten to fifteen shifts.
About 3 miles up the road I pulled over, shut the car off and opened the door to kill the stereo. Cranked it up and right away the outside temp reading jumped from 70 degrees to 85 degrees. No more revs on shift and ran fine all the way home for the next 15 miles.
I have to take it in for the first oil change within the next few weeks and I'll bring it up to the service manager then. I'm just going to start the documentation process now though for my own notes.

I experienced the 'Run Power Active' issue this afternoon coming home from work. I was at a stop light and had just shifted to 1st gear, so the clutch was still to the floor. The air conditioner shut off and my RPMs dropped to zero, but the radio was still on and I noticed the 'Run Power Active' display along with the start button flashing green. I pushed the start button and it started right up and air kicked back on. The light turned green and I drove home with no other issues. I looked in the owners manual and could not find anything. My GT is completely stock with 2700 miles. It was 74 degrees today and I had only driven it a few miles from the parking lot before this happened. I've had my vehicle since mid Nov, and this is the first issue that I've experienced.

Hey Runamuck,

Let me know if this continues, and you're taking it to the dealer. I'll see how to best assist on my end, and kick that Pony back into gear. :D
