Just a quick question to see if this is normal…

my car is a 2021 GT (17k miles)

on a whim, I decided to check my oil at the office before going out to pick up lunch.

my car had been sitting for at least 3 hours and when I opened the hood it was still pretty darn warm/ hot under there.

everything looks normal from what I have seen:
oil level
oil temps (digital display)
coolant level
coolant temp gauge

is this normal for the 5.0 or should I have it checked?

any time I have opened the hood after driving it, its extremely hot under there to the point I questioned if it was getting enough air coming in?
but again, all levels and temps look ok

really appreciate the insight

thank you 😊

its my first Ford and definitely first v8
(had about 1 yr now and love it)

we have had some ridiculously hot days in Maryland.

the day I mention was actually cooler and my drive to work is about 25 miles of highway and no traffic so plenty of airflow.

I guess that thick matting under the hood traps a lot of heat.

the hood heat extractors dont look to have much of any air duct or flow to them… is the design setup to keep from water dumping in when it rains?

again, thanks for the quick reply 👍🏻

A lot of us install hood struts because of the high temps, can't standing grabbing the stupid hood stick and burning my hand

I wrapped mine in a spot with tesa tape, holds up great and insulates against the heat.

But yes, this is normal. These are big engines with a lot of moving parts, they have a lot of thermal mass. The little hood vents are more to vent air pressure at speed than for heat extraction.

thank you for this input 😊

I had thought about dremeling the channels out of the bottom portion of the extractor assembly to have more ventilation but may end up with extra water ingress ?

Bruv.... I can barely check the oil with my strut brace when the engine is up to normal temperature it is so hot in there. It is amazing how things survive... especially the AC line wrapped in heat wrap right beside the header on the passenger side. But it all survives and was engineered to do it.

Amazing how much heat plastic, wires and all those bits can take.

granted, I’ve never owned an engine this big or powerful but the amount of retained heat after running a while is crazy.

maybe there is a way to port more air in from the lower portion of the bumper on the passenger side?
to blow fresh air over the top of the engine

kind of like the ram air ducts but for the passenger side?

must be nice to have a garage 😉

probably super convenient if you have hood struts?

I need to get those for sure
tinkering around the prop rod is a pain

The GT350 runs even hotter. If riding in town traffic in the summer with a/c on, I've seen inlet air(underhood) temps hit 160 degrees. Every time I come home, first thing I do is open the hood to let it cool off. Then I connect the battery tender wires once it's cool enough. I've had the battery tender wire connectors start to melt, when one time I connected them right away, and closed the hood. Never again.

My garage gets sauna hot if I pull in and close the door right away. I leave the gate door open for a few hours to let the car and my garage get some fresh air. Drives my wife crazy.

Just installed Race Louvers. Problem solved. Car runs cooler under all conditions and cools faster when stopped and shut off.
