Hello guys, hope all are doing well? Have a question. I have a 22 mustang gt for the most part it is all stock except for a exhaust and k&n drop in filter. Was thinking I would like to go to e85. What is needed in order for me to do so besides the tune. Do I need to get a flex fuel kit? And is it worth it? Do I get a little more power ? I know its cheaper and combust cleaner. What are your guys opinion.
Thank you guys have a great day.

Honestly not worth the hassle in my opinion, unless you go with a true canbus flex fuel solution like PCMTEC. Even then you get 30% less mileage and should be changing oil at an increased frequency.

Some have reported the proflex controller as a simpler option that doesn't require any tuning.

All you need is a tune.

There are three ways to do this
  1. E85 only tune: Best and cheapest option if you live in a place with lots of e85 around and never plan on running gasoline again. This option is the least effort, flash a tune and be done, requires no extra hardware.
  2. Inferred flex tune: Allows you to switch between fuels but doesn't do well at random mixtures, good if you plan to run e85 all the time but only rarely switch to gasoline. Requires no extra hardware. Typically makes less power than the other two options, requires attention when switching from e85 to gas and vice versa.
  3. PCMTec canbus flex: Good if you have sporadic access to e85 and will be spending a lot time at random concentrations and want the ability to switch from e85 to gas frequently. Most expensive option, requires an additional sensor and simple wiring. This doesn't suffer the power reduction seen in option 2.

Its worth it, you will feel it, and it makes the car more fun to drive.

I use option 3, I built the harness myself, and I also made the tune myself. I originally used a sensor bracket and hose configuration I came up with on my own but have since switched to a solution made by another member here for simplicity and robustness. Kits are available now that do not require any cutting or splicing of the harness.

Note: It is completely possible to make option 2 perform almost as good as option 3, but I'm not aware of any commercially available tunes that do this. I only actually know of one person who's done this so far.

If you have easy access to e85, then yes, it is absolutely worth it for the smiles per gallon.

I chose option 1 and you can definitely feel the difference. Gen 3 coyotes are better equipped to take advantage of E 85, they have direct injection and 12:1 compression. The tuner can crank up the timing and the engine loves it. The older 4.6 3v engines were not worth switching to E85, the compression was lower and an e85 tune might get you 5 hp on them.

A bad batch of E85 can really mess with your performance and drivability. Purchase fuel from high volume stations that have good turnover and cater to the performance crowd if possible. If in doubt, especially with winter blended fuel, there are a variety of testers to choose from and checking for clarity and ethanol content is simple and quick. Additives are always a controversial topic but the Driven additive for carbureted engines (works fine for injected engines, too) seems popular.

I just finished option3. installed the rpg canbus flex fuel kit. super easy to install.
while I was at it tho I did the 18+ manifold locked out, 18+ air filter top lid and 2020 gt500 injectors. wengerd tuned it via avid controller.
so far been very happy with the initial results but I don't drive the car enough and am only at e45. I had a full tank of 91 when I converted so slowly working on switching over.
everything works great and I can definitely tell there's more poop under the hood. can't wait until I'm on e75(best I can get currently).

I went back and forth on options 1 and 2 and decided the hands off approach would be better...

E85 is the best bang for the buck mod you can do on a gen 3 coyote if you are NA.
