This happened to my UK spec RHD convertible; I couldn't get in using the manual key, but I was turning it the "wrong way" - so try both clockwise and counter clockwise. As has been said, it is a mechanical latch so you can get it to the car, and use the hood release so you can put jump leads onto the battery to get it going.

The Ford dealer here has tested the battery and say it needs replacing; appararantly if it goes completely flat it can damage the cells and it will never recover fully... but none are in stock in the UK.

I know a Cadillac XTS owner that broke the window because the battery died and he didn't know about the lever.
Like the guy who panicked because it was starting to rain and he locked his keys in the car with the top down.

On the driverside door latch, the right of the door latch the plastic trim poops off and there is a key hole like a normal door lock that the key inside the fob unlocks in case the battery dies.

and its one pain in the rear to get the bit of trim to pop off, easy to put back on
also the lock is pretty tight, best to use the key for the glove box, as a lot easily to hold that key and get purchase on it
and once you get the battery fired up, could muck up your tire pressure readings and the SYNC 3 sound for a few mins, things like Memory settings and radio settings were fine
and yes it happened to me
