Hey all,

I got a code PO430 - Catalyst System below efficiency threshold bank 2.

I've gotten it a few times and just made a note and cleared it but now I think its time to deal with it.

Has anyone else gotten this code and if so, what was your fix?

Cheers,

This code means your cat has failed (most likely). Its a P0430, it has a sister code P0420 for the other side which you don't seem to have.

Unfortunately the only repair for this is a new cat. Don't waste your time replacing the O2 sensors despite what people may tell you, the car can detect a failed O2 sensor. You can check for exhaust leaks as a hopeful measure but its unlikely. I can't recall which side the 30 code refers to, but if its the drivers side it require swapping the entire header. Passenger side is easier and just unbolts at a flange below the car.

It’s probably just a bad o2 sensor. The likely hood of a cat going bad is very slim.

The car can tell the difference between a bad O2 sensor and a bad cat. Gen3 cars have cat failure issues even stock.

My fix on my '19 was to keep clearing it until I sold it. I was tuned though. :giggle:

First I’ve heard of this and I own one.
It happens, it happened to me, likely happened to OP here. I've heard of a few other instances though other people as well. Its not super common, but it absolutely happens.

The substrate is really weak, if it cracks it causes a leak path which eventually triggers the P0420/P0430. That's how mine let go. A lot of them break when boosted, but they can break without boost too.

The real thing is that the way the car checks for a failed cat requires the sensor to be working, it can't complete the cat check routine with a bad sensor, so it can know the difference between a failed sensor and a failed cat. If its showing a failed cat it means the sensor is working.

For information purposes, many emissions components are covered under warranty by the manufacturer to 8 years or 80k miles per federal law. Things like the cats, sensors, ecm, etc.
IDK if that still pertains to failure from boosting but since Ford does sell and install superchargers I'd guess it does.

She was in the shop this morning. Everything is covered under warranty. They said it would cost $1,000 for bank 2 and $500 for bank 1, if it wasn't covered. Parts on order and should be fixed next week.

20 is pass side, 30 drivers. Header comes it in like 5 minutes on the drivers side. 1 hour repair tops.
