Ford is not known for great transmissions and the GT just magnifies its flaws. However, it is perfectly suited for the V6.
Ford might be interested in this analysis. You should call them up.

I drove a base model GT auto with what I assume had 3.15 gears before buying my premium with 3.55s. The base didn't feel near as strong to me.
So you're not sure if the base had taller gears but you know the premium with 3.55's felt stronger?

This thread... lol

Yes, you are Brilliant! But what you fail to grasp is that that same automatic transmission completely mutes that extra 135HP. Starts were sluggish, shifts were too quick to maximize the torque curve, and you needed to jack around with the driving mode and shift paddles just to make it livable. Ford is not known for great transmissions and the GT just magnifies its flaws. However, it is perfectly suited for the V6.
Get a Dyno tune jack and it will be a horse of a diff color.

M3 has a DSG/SMG gear box totally different than the autos in the s550

All cars come with Advancetrac (stability control) and traction control.

For base cars press trac button once leave advtrac on and turns the trac control off. Pushing twice quickly (sport mode) leaves both on but turns down the sensitivity. At a stop push brake and hold button for 8secs turns everything off.

If you ever messed around in the rain and tried sliding the rear out you will def tell when the advtrac kicks in
Thank you sir! I didn't know about this feature. Even just putting advancetrac on sport mode, it feels so much better! That's awesome.

I love my auto transmission. Just don't drive it in D mode. That does suck. But sport mode is awesome. I just use the paddle shifters.

(auto owners don't take this personal!)

This is the first Ford I have owned in 20 years and the first Mustang since my first car at 16 (a 1970 w/302)

*** AUTO OWNERS, DO NOT READ NEXT SENTENCES IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED :D ***

The auto was the worst POS I have ever driven in a sports/muscle car. I was so put-off, I decided I was not going to buy ANY mustang. I was crushed, I had the trade-in ready, I had the check book...I WAS READY TO BUY!!

Then, to be 100% certain, I went to the dealer with the same car only with a 6-speed......heaven. I simply could not believe they were the same car with the same engine. I literally drove it for 45 seconds and knew I was buying it.

Now I had driven a new S550 Vert, just not a GT. In Vegas I rented a V6 Vert auto and was very impressed. If I had to buy an auto, I would save the 15K and buy the V6.
Was probably in wet/slow mode or you drove a lemon. My gt auto with 3.55s pulls like a bat outta hell.

It's pretty much been proven the 3.15 autos are the fastest.

The fastest at what? 60 foot times, 1/4 mile, top speed?

With what wheel size? 17, 18, 19, 20?

N/A, SC, nitrous?

Sorry but there is no proof of anything as there are way too many variables to make such a statement.

With the gearing of the 6r80 the 3.15s are plenty of gear for 1st and 2nd. A good tune is the best mod to improve the shifting characteristics. The shift point and aggressiveness is all based on throttle position. I keep it in D unless I'm doing spirited driving or racing. The shifts at WOT in S mode are hard and lightning fast. It'll break the tires loose each shift 1-4. A couple tuners did a test of 3.15, 3.31, 3.55 and 4.10 gears in the last mustang 11-14 and saw no significant improvement in 1/4 mile times. There is an old thread on SVT Performance for those who want to read it.

Actually there is, it's in the drag racing section. Just look at the lists.

Drive is intent on getting you into 6th gear sooner than possible. So the car spends a lot of time running at less than 1500 RPM. Yeah, that feels a little sluggish. It would feel sluggish if you drove a 6MT in 6th gear around town, too.

My favorite is S on the transmission and using the paddle shifters. I think Sport mode holds gears a little too tenaciously in most situations (though it works well on the open road). Around town, paddle shifting lets me get smoothly into 3rd, which proves to be a great gear for much of my in-town driving. If I go downtown, I am in 2nd a lot.

Fact is, those are the same gears I used to use in my Fox Mustang with 2.73 rear end. The highway gears are fine, you just need to hold the transmission down a gear and keep the revs up. The engine sings, the exhaust roars, and all is good. NOT sluggish.'

If you look over on the Leaderboard 1/4 mile thread, you'll find that a 3.15 AT is faster through the 1/4 than a PP. Typically 12.9 v. 13.0 or 13.1, dead stock (Yes, I know your tuned or modded car is faster than that; I am not talking about mods.) A 3.55 AT is another tenth or two faster than the 3.15 AT. We are NOT talkinging about fast cars and dogs. They are all fast; you just have to use the gears you have properly.

This is the first Ford I have owned in 20 years and the first Mustang since my first car at 16 (a 1970 w/302) I have been a Corvette and Mercedes guy. I decided I wanted another Mustang Vert after I bought my son a 2011 V6 Vert because it was just so much fun.

Since I am an old man, and my wife and boys would probably be driving the new Stang, I thought the best route was the Auto. I have had 3 Corvettes (2003, 2005, 2014 Stingray) and it did not make a big difference in them, they were rockets off the line any way you did it.

I actually had decided to buy the 2016 GT Vert before I had even driven it. When I went to buy my car i went to two dealers, one had a 6-speed and one had a Auto...the rest was basically the same.

LOL! God I hope your mt82 doesn't take a dump on you and have wondering why your best decision ever in getting a 6spd manual has suddenly turned into a nightmare.

My EB Premium w/PP also pulls very hard and shifts great (in D or Sport) - it too has the 3.55's.

And I've owned and driven nothing but manual Mustangs, trucks and BMWs before this EB - IMO, this auto trans is no slouch when compared to other types/make/models with auto transmissions.

Ok guys, after a little messing around I did find that using the sport mode is a lot faster. To be fair I just hadn't got on it much yet as I wanted to break it in good first. My only complaint so far is you can't keep it in one gear for long as it automatically shifts. In my manual, 3rd gear seemed like the best to really wind it out. I'm sure this one is a little quicker, but just doesn't seem like it. It also doesn't seem to quite as loud. Is there anything to do to get a little more sound besides the obvious of exhaust and/or intake? I will probably do these mods down the road.

Just to clarify, on your base, when you say "sport mode" are you referring to the trans pulled in to S - as in Select? Because I would think it works like my auto where in S the trans is still full auto until I paddle it one time, then it becomes a manual and holds the gears as I cycle through them.

"Sport Mode" on the toggles changes the automatic shift points (and maybe the throttle map) but if you leave the shifter in D it will still override the paddles after a few moments. If you pull the shifter into S (in any of the Toggle modes), then the paddle shifters really control. It holds gears without many exceptions (it will shift down if you slow enough that the gear you are in won't work, like 15 in 6th. And it shifts to 1st when you stop.)
