My TPMS started to fail a couple of weeks before I planned to switch to track wheels/tires and I did have any plans to leave the city. But then I had to drive an hour to a funeral and on the way home a tire blew off. With a bare passenger side rear wheel, I lost control on the highway, hit the median, and ended up stopped in the middle of the highway. My wife and I then watched a work van hit the rear of the car. We are very lucky to walk away unscathed (I think the car handling and Recaro seats were key) but my car is being totaled. Total payoff from State Farm is $93K, which seems pretty good. But as everyone here knows, this car is irreplaceable. I will cherish the memories, especially the track days.

See the tire pictures below - even going flat I don't think the outer tread should come entirely off the wheel, ripping away from the sidewalls. The tires are General GMAX RS 305/30-19. I will be contacting General tire.

This forum has been very helpful and I wish everyone well. I have already moved on to an Audi RS3 - sounds needs major improvement but is fun around town. I am hoping it does ok on the track. And I get to stay with a a unique engine - 5 cylinders.

This is why I manually check my tire pressures once a week, regardless if the TMPS are fully functional.

What's a general GMAX tire? How old were the tires?

I wouldn't expect much more than resistance from general tire. General tire?......

Tires were about 1 year old with plenty of good tread on them. I bought them as basic spring/fall tires when not running my summer track tires on the carbon wheels. They are supposed to be Ultra High Performance Summer Tires at $285 and tested decently at Tire Rack:

Glad you're ok, but what does having a TPMS or not have to do with tires blowing out on the highway like that? Sounds like it was a pretty quick thing, nothing a TPMS would have had enough time to warn you about giving you time to pull over safely.

Then that just sucks. You bought them and they were 1 year old from when you purchased them or did they have a different date code on the tire.

If they were fresh, brand new tires, I'd be pissed. That is some major damage.. I recently watched a series on youtube where they fixed similar damage and it was one hell of a job.

What was the date code on the tire? The review was back in 2019.
