If you are in normal mode and mash the gas they just open. And the car in normal mode is very quite, perhaps your "normal" mode before the fix had the valves slighly open (hence the errors)

Questions for other owners (to help address my "Am I crazy or not" issues):

- Before pressing the red button, do you depress the clutch and wait for the exhaust valves to run through their cycle, or do you not pay attention to this and just press the clutch and quickly hit the red button?

- On a cold start, when you hit the red button, as the RPMs fly up and settle down to idle, can you hear the exhaust switching between open and closed?

Thinking of your gas peddle as 1=foot off and 10=WOT to the floor:

- In 'normal' exhaust mode, at what number do you begin to hear the valves open?

- In 'normal' mode, when cruising at, say 40 mph in 4th, is your car's engine as quiet as it is in 6th at 60?

- In 'normal' mode, when sitting still and you rev the engine, do you hear the exhaust valves open at all, at any point?

I just press the clutch and hit the red button. No waiting here and no problems so far.

Yeah, every time I start it up I hear the flaps open and close a few times before it settles into Normal mode

Nope. I've never heard the flaps open while sitting still and revving the engine in Normal mode. I only hear them open up while under load. But I'm in Sport or Track mode 99% of the time anyways so maybe they do open up and I've just never noticed?

raiderjatt02 Thank you! Really appreciate it.

Drilling down a bit:

- In 'normal' mode, at moderate acceleration, do your exhaust valves open at any point in the RPM band (assume a shift of around 4000)?

They open again in 6th gear at around 100mph whatever that RPM range is. But full throttle in 6th at lower speeds does not cause them to open.

Thanks. Let's say you're in 'normal' exhaust mode, pulling away from a stoplight with moderate acceleration, and your normal shift point is around 4k. Do you hear the valves open at any point before you shift either 1-2 or 2-3?

No. They only open under heavier acceleration in gears 1-5 in my experience. With that being said I run 99% in sport mode with them open so I don't have a ton of experience in the normal mode.

It feels like they open up a bit if I give it more than half throttle. In normal driving, it's easy to keep the exhaust closed because as soon as I hear them opening up I just slightly back off the throttle and they close right back up again. If I keep my RPMs below 4000 then I have no problem keeping it in quiet mode.

I would say when in normal mode it seems to me at about 4 on your 10 point throttle position scale and somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm the active exhaust valves open up. It took me a while to get accustomed to how much throttle I can give it in the mornings leaving for work when I'm trying to keep the car quiet.

Thank you. You guys have convinced me that, despite the new cat-back, my system is still not working correctly. My dealer will have no clue what to do next.

You should definitely be able to tell if the baffles are working. I mean...the bass, it drops it like it's hot much less the volume increase.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but has anyone else had the same issue and managed to fix it?

I've had the issue intermittently (discussed in my post #28 above). I called Ford Performance about a month ago to ask if a code was stored when the "Drive Mode Selection Unavailable" alert shows up on the instrument panel, so that if I took it to a dealer, there would be something stored to help guide them. Ford Performance couldn't tell me whether a code was stored.

I haven't taken it back to the dealer. I haven't received the DMSU message in about 2 weeks, so at this point I'm waiting to see whether it re-appears. I've peered up the exhaust pipes several times to see if anything was restricting the exhaust flaps, but never saw anything. I'd like to think it's fixed itself (maybe there was a small restriction I couldn't see), but I wouldn't be surprised if it comes back. Fingers crossed.

Bumping again as this is the bane of my existence right now. About 1/2 of the times I start the car I get this error. If I turn it off and restart the coin flip continues and eventually I get a clean start and can flip the car into sport mode.

I took it to the a dealer and of course, no issues. Ran pretty well yesterday and then today I hit a string of bad coin flips. I suppose I have to head back to the dealer and hope they can figure it out. I am not mechanically inclined at all and wouldn't know where to start on plugs etc.

Really sad when I hit the button all excited and see that stupid error box. Just killing me right now. Has anyone else heard anything concrete on this?

Did the dealer find a code stored for this in your car? If it's doing it about 1/2 the time, I'd think it would have be clearly demonstrable to the dealer.
