Good morning,

i recently installed new rotors and pads, and am hearing one of the pads dragging constantly when not on the brakes. I suspect this was happening before, but just didn’t notice as the old pads were less aggressive and didn’t make noise.

I inserted pictures below of what the old rear left rotor looked like - note that the pad had plenty of life, it wasn’t scoring because of that. The new rotor seems to be wearing with the same inner score wearing in. I’m wondering if that’s visual evidence of the dragging?

the dragging does not occur audibly til the pads warm up a bit to noisy levels. At slow speeds, it sounds rhythmic, like it’s not necessarily dragging the whole way around the rotor. I also noticed one of my lugs on that wheel is ever so slightly angled - my usual thin wall socket sometimes won’t fit, but a spark plug socket does.

Anyway, I would really appreciate any ideas, or things to look for troubleshooting wise when I’m in the shop Friday working on it. I swapped the pads and rotors myself but had a mechanic look it over to see if I did something wrong to cause the dragging.

Things expand as they warm up and the rythmic

Things expand as they heat up so that is why you don't hear the dragging sound when brakes are cold. The rhythmic sound I would guess is a high spot on the rotor or it is not mounted flush to the axle. Also check that the parking brake is fully releasing.

Definitely could be that it’s expansion, but these pads also just don’t make noise when they’re totally cold. Once they get up to a little bit of temp they squeal when braking too

I’ll try to figure out how to check the parking brake, thanks. Think it’s possible a slightly bent lug stud could cause the rotor not to be totally flush?

I doubt the stud has anything to do with it. Check the runout on both sides of the rotor.

Does your car have Brembos? It doesn't look like it in the pic but I can't tell for sure.

Do standard brakes still have the cross spring?

The cross spring was rubbing on mine when I changed pads...

Nope, no Brembos and I think the issue is in the rear but not totally sure. I’ll check out that thread, really appreciate it!

Are the rears the same on base and PP do you know?

Ah, I completely missed that we were talking about the rears. I think they're the same across both models but I'm not 100% on that. I didn't mess with the rear brakes so I'm not sure if they use a cross spring as well, so I might not have been any help, sorry about that!

It’s very possible it’s the fronts, I just don’t see that visible rotor scoring up there. I appreciate the reply nonetheless

If it is the fronts and it's the cross spring, you won't see the scoring or rub marks until you remove the cross spring and look underneath it...

Yeah for sure - meant that as in, I CAN see visible scoring on the rear
