You guys with manuals, how many of you have wives/SOs who can't drive manual and choose not to learn - and do they complain about your choice of transmission?

I'm in this boat with my GF (no, I can't tell her to take a walk). I don't plan on tracking the car, but a manual would just make the driving experience more of, well, an experience to me. The auto GT I rented was erratic, and I never felt comfortable with its shift logic in the 3 days I had it, and the paddle shift delay was enough to make that a useless feature to me. I'm probably still going to get the manual anyway regardless of how fabulous the 10 speed might be (as I have a second 'practical' vehicle available), just wanted to see if anyone else has had or has this similar situation. She is not a car person, so I can never really get her to understand the draw. And to get ahead of any questions, I am paying for this completely on my own, and I'd drive it exclusively (except in an emergency situation where she may have to drive it).

My gf says the same thing, (she drives a 14 escape) when she says i should get an automatic so she can drive, i tell her if she likes my mustang so much she should get a gt in automatic! She paid as much for her titanium escape as i did my mustang.. Then we would both be happy because i hate escapes, id rather have an explorer.

I can't see having a car like the Mustang without a manual trans. For me, it just doesn't work. I get that others like autos, and I have no doubt a guy with an automatic would wipe me out in drag race. But straight line performance is of no interest to me, I've been into road and oval racing since I was 9 years old, that would be 54 years ago.

Our 2nd car is an SUV and it has an auto trans that can be shifted, which I do for engine braking only. I wouldn't have anything but an auto in that car, it just works really well.

BTW, my wife can drive a manual, she drove our '11 Brembo GT manual. You know, the one with the transmission that everyone said was awful to shift and all? She never had an issue with it, and finds the '16 even better, as do I.

And another BTW, the manual/auto debate will soon be irrelevant once Big Brother puts us all into their robot cars.

My gf can't drive stick, but it's my car, my payment, my business. If my gf wanted to force me to buy a car that she wanted so she could drive even though it was my money I wouldn't be dating them. Comes off harsher than I mean just through typing. She has her own car that's a people mover so she doesn't need to drive mine. I've offered to teach her manual so she could, but she declines. In emergencies where she can't drive her car there's always uber, a friend, or a rental car. My gf understands the whole car thing and knows I'll probably always have a manual sporty car so she's ok with it.

That won't be in our lifetime.

Sorry, thought just about everyone here would recognize the name Billy Johnson.

Billy is a top level Ford professional racing driver....he has been called Ford's "secret weapon".
Thanks. I really had no idea.

My fiance can't drive a manual, but she doesn't complain about my car being manual. She has said she's willing to learn, but not on my car - she's afraid she'll break it, lol. She said if I bought her a little beater with a manual, she'd be happy to learn on that. So after our house closes, I might do that.

My wife can't drive a manual either. She has her own car, she doesn't need to drive mine.

Most girls I bring in my car (w/o them knowing its a stick) are impressed by it :D because they didn't think guys still drove MT's. They usually want me to teach em too but I get scared, I don't want em f*ing up my car so I just don't ever extend the offer.

Last November, my coworker got a new car (12 fusion) and I told her "congrats, can I test drive it"...she said "i'll let you drive it if you let me ride your stick":clap2:. Ahhh the joys of MT.

My ex-gf is still planning on getting a MT when she gets a car because I let her try out my MS3 when I had one, and she said it was more fun to drive stick.

Depends on how old you are!! If you're a baby boomer, maybe not in your lifetime. But if you're some young buck on here.... in college then yeah it will be.

Uber, Tesla, Apple, Google, etc... are all working on beta trials right now.

Mid-20s. No doubt they will have self driving cars, but his post mentioned being forced to ride in one. I don't think that will happen in my lifetime.

The only other thing to consider is a supercharger. A bunch of guys switched to auto's after having supercharged GT's. Personally, not for me, but something to consider.
Came from an automatic commuter. Found myself drifting off into never never land instead of enjoying the ride.

Billy Johnson just recently said that he had just driven the 18 Mustang GT with the 10 speed auto trans....he self admitted that he's a manual kind of guy, but after driving the 10 speed auto he said it would really be a hard/tough decision between the manual and the auto trans.

If Billy is enthusiast about the auto trans, then I'd say it must be very good.

I'm in the same boat as Billy and a lot of folks here....always been a manual kind of guy. But, as I get closer to 60, an auto trans ( if it's a really good one ) seems to start making a lot of sense. My track days are a small portion of the total mileage that I drive the car.....and an auto in heavy traffic would be awfully nice at times.

So...while I want to drive one and find out for myself, Billy's recommendation goes a long way toward me taking a much harder look at the 10 speed auto in the 18 Mustang that I'm seriously considering.
See Guys aren't you glad i made this thread!
