Go for the auto. Trust me, you can have PLENTY of fun in it.

My car is an auto, and apart from somewhat slows up shifts, I have to say, in Sport mode it complements the power of the 5.0 quite well.

During spirited driving it stays in the appropriate gear and won't up shift until the driver reverts back to a more civilized mode of throttle application. After applying about half throttle or more, you can watch the tach hovering around 4000-5000 RPM for a good 6 seconds before you can hear it up shift to the appropriate cruising gear if no more hard throttleing is performed. In that sense, you can keep the engine in the power band with none of the issues usually associated with an automatic transmission.

In addition, it is a pretty bulletproof trans at the end of its production cycle so you won't likely have any longevity, durability, or reliability concerns. It's been in use in several applications for many years so any issues with it have long since been addressed.

When you test drive this car make certain to drive it in Sport mode otherwise the transmission will operate like the usual shit auto boxes that one find in economy cars, thus making you think the car has a lackluster transmission.

+ 1 on that ^

Sport and track modes change the shift points making the auto trans quite fun to drive. I also recommend you consider the gear ratio when looking at an auto trans car as I believe the 3.55s make a big difference.

...also the paddle shifters are underrated.

I went with auto mustangs this time because I have HAD ENOUGH OF THE GARBAGE MT-82 in my 2012 to last 100 lifetimes. When I want to row gears, I pull my heavily modified Miata out and thrash it for a while.

For a street car and/or racing with corners, I prefer a manual. Most of my Mustangs have been manuals in the past. Gotta say that I hated the MT-82 in my '11 GT (Brembo Brake Pkg), though.

For a street/strip car, I prefer an automatic. The 6R80 is an awesome automatic, especially when paired with a big stall converter. I can sum it up easily for the OP since he's leaning toward drag racing: Stalled Auto FTW!

I'm sure that some drivers find automatics entertaining to drive. Maybe many. Just as there are some who don't and perhaps never will.

Less Weight - even you've got a quibble with 'can have plenty of fun with an automatic', that there is at least one thing about it that isn't working all that well for you and won't let you ignore it.

Seems OP has dragstrip use pulling him toward the automatic, and a long history of driving stick working against that. Do you choose for what probably amounts to less than 1% of the time/miles you drive your car one way or the 99% that you drive it differently?

Paddles are probably a more natural way to manually command an AT shift for those whose driving has mostly been in AT cars with column shifters (IOW, most everything except sporty cars).

A + / - floor shifter gate seems more natural for anybody coming over to automatics from mostly MT driving - that floor shift lever is what you've always reached for to make shifts happen once those "3 on the tree" setups went away.

I love a MT...loooove a MT.

But the transmission with this car just has me worried. I've searched and come up with thread after thread of these breaking and I do not want to go down that road.

I'd like them to be bulletproof like the T56 were so I can take it to the track and never lift going down the strip. :headbang:

Hmm, funny...I don't see thread after thread of these breaking. Are there complaints? Yup, but breaking doesn't seem to be one of them.

Maybe I should have worded "breaking" into "failing". Tomato/tomato I say

Who wants to own a car but is terrified of modding or beating on due to transmission issues? I'd love nothing more than to own a reliable 2015 GT M6 I can take to the track in near stock form and beat on all day/night and know I can go home that day under it's own free will.

One of those is a clutch failure, one was someone who grenaded their trans when they missed 4th at WOT at the drag-strip, a couple were for drive-train vibration and only one was for actual transmission failure.

My point is, for all of the faults the MT-82 has, failure seems to be the lowest on the totem pole.

It's an issue none the less. Just like the EBs were having a lot more failures than the V6 and V8s. It's only overblown when it doesn't happen to you.
