Just a quick question. If a tuned car is re-flashed by the dealer, will the car be undriveable after?

Few things could happen. You might lose performance achieved through the tuning, or it could cause the car to run poorly or even risk damage. CEL is likely, and then there are the warranty concerns. What kind of tune do you have?

I'm trading the car in and not sure if the dealership will flash/refresh the car after it is sold to them. Just a basic (canned) Lund Tune. The only "power" adder might be the headers. But I believe that the tune for adding headers was no different in the canned tune.

If you used a handheld tuner like an SCT or Cobb tuner to flash the Lund canned tune you should be able to reflash the stock tune back in the car yourself with it. No need for the dealer to worry about or even be told about.

LOL welp that is gonna be the next person's problem to deal with once you sign over the title as a trade!! Haha I applaud you for being a conscious individual at least.

Who knows, maybe 5 weeks from now when someone buys your car they will stroll on over to this fine forum and ask, "Yo, just bought car, why does it run like shit? How can I hold dealer responsible and get my money back?" 🤣 Happens too often that it is almost sad.

Put your contact information in the owner manual and the can contact you. Sometimes they do and Sometimes they don't.

Yeah, I was VERY up front when I traded my GT..... It is tuned, do NOT re flash it back stock unless you are taking off the intake and other bits.... They didn't... Current owners are very happy. I told the salesman they can contact me... I still have the tune if it gets wiped :) but my RTD is in use for my current car too so giving the tune device is not an option...

I wouldn't leave the SCT because it might come up missing, but that wouldn't be on you

Hello; Been reading and following threads about used cars and their tunes for a while now. Have come to one conclusion so far. That being the only somewhat secure way to buy a used Ford Mustang is from a factory Ford dealer. They apparently can redo (flash) a tune to factory settings.
Do not intend to imply other sources are never worth using. More that the other sources (dealers/private parties) may not be able to fix a tune. Already in this thread we find that some who sell/trade a tuned Mustang plan to keep the tuner device. Also, that even if a conscientious seller leaves the device for the next owner, the dealer may toss it away.
I have been posting in a different thread created by a member from Spain about poor running of his Mustang. While the issues are not yet resolved & understood it seems the tune is a strong suspect. Several other such threads related to tunes.

I do have some questions but will ask only one. How can a buyer tell if a car has an aftermarket tune?

All the cars i've tuned and traded in i've taken the tune off. To me that's the right thing to do unless you want C(k)arma looking for you.

I offered on mine.... BUT they wanted the car exactly like it was :) I would have put it back stock, but they thought the mods would help them selling it. I think they already had someone in mind to buy it that wanted the mods :) and honestly I didn't want the hassle. I could have dumped the tune, but it wouldn't have ran right at all... I didn't want that.

Suprised they took a tuned and modded car on trade. Did you get a fair price for it? I wouldn’t expect to recoup costs but I would figure they would try to screw you on it.

It was fair I thought. They first told me the mods didn't hold any value. I went back the next day and said I was putting back stock before the trade, then they said we valued it like it was.... So I said Eff it and just sold it like it was... They obviously slept on it and found a buyer that wanted it like I had it. I had it setup really nice... It sat on their lot for a while, I went by and checked several times and they didn't mess with it. Sold it like I traded. They could tell I am extremely meticulous with my cars and it was a great car... They did give a decent value, but they didn't wiggle at all on the new one :) , they knew what they had in a 4000 mile manual Mach 1 in immaculate shape :)
