Long story short, I bought a '15 GT that seems to have a tune but I don't have the tuner and can't get in touch with the previous owner. It also came with only one fob.

Bringing it to the local dealer later this afternoon. Will that be a problem? I've Googled and searched the forum and there just seems to be a lot of back and forth without an actual answer. There's no warranty left to the car, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Why can't you get in touch with the previous owner?

I bought the car from a dealership that he traded it to. I asked them to pass along my contact info and haven't heard anything.

Regardless... Will I have a problem? Do dealers bust people's chops because of warranty and if it's not under warranty I'll be good or is it an actual issue?

It's not a warranty thing, so I don't understand your concerns. They can either program it, or they can't, you'll see soon.

Riiiiiight... I'm wondering if dealerships have used warranty as an excuse or if they really do have a problem programming fobs on cars with tunes.

Dealers aren't going to "bust people's chops" over warranty, or use warranty as an excuse, because warranty would never enter the conversation. It has 0 bearing on the issue.

So whether they can or can't program it, warranty has 0 to do with it.

Well, the reason I ask about that is because it's come up in every other thread about the question.

There isn't anybody on the forum that works as a Ford tech, is there?

There's been threads where dealers have refused to program key-fobs over some sort of warranty issue?

Yes. A search is illuminating.

Anyway, do you have a constructive answer for my question or is your aim to push my thread off topic?

I don't have to search. I know there's never been a situation where a dealer has "busted people's chops" or made excuses about not being able to programming a key-fob, over warranty. You're clearly confusing something on the topic.

What I think you actually mean is due to the car being tuned.

Well, yeah. That essentially was the original question.

Hey Tom, I don't think the service tech will even bother to check something like the status of a tune when programming a key. They'll likely do the bare minimum to get the key programmed, and since you're probably paying out of pocket for this, no warranty claims should come in to play. But if this does happen let us know for the next guy that needs a key and has a tune on their car!

Well, I guess I'll find out in a short while. LOL

Thanks.

David, when i first got my car I only had one key. I made the rookie mistake of messing with "my key" (didnt have a manual either) and made a mess out of things. Long story short, I went to a Lock smith who ordered my new key and programmed it, and I instantly deleted the my key, and now have everything back to 2 admin keys.

It was pricey, but still cheaper than the dealer by about $250.

Just a thought.

BTW shine on you crazy diamond<<< Im a Gilmour fan too, 74 highwatt and all

Unfortunately I'm not David although, funnily enough, that is my brother's and father's names. LOL The name's Tom. I am also a guitarist and certainly lust for a Hiwatt, but the wife might kill me if I add a fourth amp to the collection along with the 25 guitars. LOL

So, I paid $150+tax for the fob itself (I'll get the emergency key at some point later, but I just transferred the one I have into the new fob while the old one will hang off my wife's keychain) and $90 for the programming.

Good news: I have two functioning keys!

Bad(-ish) news: I now have a check engine light for code P0315 (Crankshaft position system – variation not learned) which I will get fixed tomorrow at the dealer since the guy trained on the "big machine" (as they called it) had already left for the day.

The tech said that when he hooked the laptop up (pictures below) it said that the PCM was blank and he had to basically re-flash it based on the VIN. Interestingly that means that they have base tune stored in their system by VIN, but also means that I likely did have a tune. He reprogrammed it and the car runs, idles fine, and I'm not sure if I sense a loss of power or not on the "butt dyno" but I'm also not going to whomp on it until I get that cleared.

The takeaway: So, it looks like you need the stock tune to program a key but it's doable. This is fine, since I'm swapping exhaust soon anyway and will likely be getting a tuner of my own (unless I can find the previous owner and he just forgot to throw the tuner in the car).
