Ok all, here's the situation. My son's Ranger may have finally shot craps. His plan is to replace it with a Mustang, assuming the Ranger is toast, should have word from the shop Monday or Tuesday.

He really wants a GT, but to find one optioned the way he wants is just too much. He found a new 2018 Ecoboost in the color he wants, a 201A, 6 spd. $26k. Should he make a move on it, or hold out for GT 301A?

His only real objection to the Eco is the sound. He's not a fan of the exhaust.

I also know he's on this forum. He is VERY cautious with his money and almost always makes the smart money move.

Is the eco 201A a good enough deal at 26k?

Sounds like he should hold out and find a GT deal....they are out there. I just traded my '15 GT premium and got 28k for it. The car has 8200 miles on it and the dealer is selling it for $29,900 and it's a flawless car garage kept and in new condition.

If he wants a GT and he gets an Eco, there is a good chance he will not be happy in the long run. That being said, the Eco is an amazing car in its own right, but if he wants a V8, he won't be happy.

He will not be satisfied with the Eco. I had a 17 GT and didn't like the exhaust sound so I traded for a 18 gt. He could find a lightly used GT for $27,000.

Never settle, get what you want. If not, you’re just going to take a bath on the EB when you trade it for the GT you want.

Unless he's really happy with the eco, which he may be, it's a great car. It drives a little different from the GT, much lighter in the front end, some people prefer that.

Go check out cargurus.com and do a country wide search - you’re bound to hit on a GT with the options being sought.

I have an eco and honestly wanted a GT. I can tell you though, the eco can be a really fun car. I have modded it and it performs and sounds much better than stock.

What do you mean by "the smart money move"? Getting a Mustang is inherently not a smart money move as far as purchasing a car. It is normally an emotional move to buy a car like a Mustang. There are many better smart money moves out there. If you are just comparing a GT to an ECO for "smart money", seems the ECO would be the choice for it better fuel economy.

Well, just heard from the shop on the Ranger. worst case senario is $1,100. Son said go ahead and fix it.

As far as the smart money move, I was simply referring to how he spends his money. He rarely makes spur of the moment purchaes, and the purches he does make are researched and thought out.

He is not concerend with the overall power of the car. He has said that the Ecoboost is enough. The Ranger is as base as you can get. No power windows or locks. It's a 20 year old truck with the small V6 that is just about wore out. If the replacement vehicle was strictly just a mode of transportaion, he would just buy a cheap p.o.s.. But he wants to upgrade. And he's earned it. He really likes the Mustang and he CAN afford a moderately equiped GT, he just doesn't want to allocate that many dollars toward a car payment. He found the eco, in the color he wants, with all of the opions he wants, plus some, at a price he thinks he can negotiate down a bit to get his payment more in line with his comfort zone. The only issue is the sound of the exhaust.

Looks like he's going to try and squeeze another year out of the Ranger. I really hope it lasts.

You traded GT for GT just for the exhaust sound?
That's a first.... lol. Instead of spending 1k on a quality catback, let me take a 7k hit on depreciation just so I can get active exhaust. Winner.

If he’s going to squeeze another year of the ranger, maybe in 2020 he can get a nice 2019 GT or 2018/19 EB.

2019 EB have the option for Active Exhaust, I’m sure he will be able to find one on a decent price next year.
