Custom Tune vs Lund

On the fence on whether I want to get the car tuned. I have a catback exhaust and was looking at the PMAS intake. Below are my questions:

1. Do I need a tuner if I get a custom tune at a local shop that has a dyno?
2. How much better is a custom tune vs a canned tune from Lund?

1. If by "tuner" you mean a handheld like an nGuage or SCT device then no, your local shop most likely uses HPT, which means they you can drive away tuned with no additional hardware needed(I tune locals this way using HPT, makes the cost of tuning much cheaper bc you are only paying for the calibration and you don't have to spend anything on any additional hardware)

2. Unless you are dealing with someone who's specializes in Coyote tuning, you will prob be better off with a Lund tune, the only thing a local dyno tune would do it give you a print out of you HP gains afterwards. If they do street tuning than it would be identical gains to what you would see from Lund.

I'm by no means an expert at tuning (and have yet to tune my Mustang although I'll prob pull the trigger soon) but I did have my previous car, a WRX, tuned. From my understanding, based on your mods, a custom dyno tune really isn't worth it. You're going to spend a lot more money for barely any gains over a canned tune, if there are any gains at all.

I wouldn't consider a dyno tune until I had some serious hardware/bolt-ons to make it worth while. Catback exhausts don't add any power. The tune itself would actually provide the most gains with a couple more hp from the intake.

My local tuner was a Ford tech for 30 years and works primarily on mustangs. He said I would need to buy a tuner. I thought if I had a custom tune I wouldn't need to buy the $400 tuner. Any idea why he wants me to buy one??

I would way prefer a custom dyno tune over email tune, but unfortunately I don't know of any solid coyotes, let alone ford tuners in my state. So lund was an easy choice

opcorn: New to the whole tune thing. Been having cars and modding for a long time but just bought the FRPP 2 kit. Been learning a lot and all these posts are good $h!t.

on a mostly stock car, or a typical bolt on build, i feel that mail order is the way to go. with the ability to data log and update tunes via email, most mail order tunes are better than a dyno tune. the dyno cant predict driving under actual conditions, but its good for a baseline, then you still need to run the car on the road and track, and revise accordingly.

plus, these cars have SO many lines of code, so many parameters, and take a ton of R&D to get a tune to the level that experienced mail orders have. most local shops just dont have the time and money to do this. pick a tuner, upload, datalog, and revise till you are happy. plus, most mail order guys offer free revisions...vs multiple paid dyno sessions.

Lund and Palm Beach have the email tunes down. With data logging and the volume of cars they see, you're going to get an excellent return on your investment. Plenty of guys in my situation running Lund email tunes at near or over 700whp.

I would want to have a handheld tuning device for the purpose of retaining my stock tune should I want to return the car to stock. Furthermore the convenience of being able to datalog and upload revisions on my own time as opposed to scheduling an appointment with the shop would be worth the extra money to me as well.

I use email tunes for minor mods on all my cars & butt dynos when you go big. You will always get a more dialed in tune with a real time/dyno session. You can probably expect a few extra whp in most cases with a real time but etunes have come a long way. My last car I had my etune baselined before getting it protuned and protune was only to pull an extra 10whp out of the car.

You will and want to have a tuner device so they can save the tune on it in the instance you need to change settings or revert to stock.

Thanks for the feedback. Knowing that each car is different I am surprised to hear more people leaning towards an etune versus one based on your car. Gives me something to think about.

E-mail tunes are not simply pulled off the shelf but rather written for your specific car, mods, available fuel, and they can even customize based on your chosen driving characteristics such as throttle sensitivity, shift points(for autos), rev limiters, and so on.
