I am a little confused, so maybe one of you can explain something to me.
I read my oil level, stone cold, after sitting a few days, just for the hell of it.

I was just about at the top hole on the stick.

When I wait the time period and check it on a warm engine, it looked to be
about a third or quarter way up from the bottom hole.

Now would it not be safe to assume that if you check it stone cold, and you are at the top mark, you are good to go?

I will be much more apt to chk the levels "before" I start the car, than wait 18 minutes or whatever it is after its been run.

I follow the factory recommendation on this, as I discovered, the level is much lower when cold than when it's hot for me and I overfilled which was a mess to take care of.

However you measure it, keep it consistent.

Wow - that is crazy - I found it higher up on the stick when cold.
I will check it again to make sure. But I am almost positive it was
at the top hole cold, and way closer to the bottom when checked warm after the time instructed.

Take it out from the top if you overfill with a mightyvac.

I usually find mine all over the place...for some reason I have to check it four or five times to get a clear consistent reading on the dipstick. Pretty much dialed in now though...im consuming about a half quart every 1000 miles.

Same here...mine is lower when stone cold sitting longer also. I like checking mine warm, cause being further up the stick gives me a great placebo effect and thus I stop freaking out thinking it moved, lol.

OK one more opposite from what I found.
Cold I thought it was higher than warm.

I guess I need to check it again.

It would just seem to me that after it has a chance to really drain down from all over the engine, it would show higher.

But I guess the the heat causes an expansion in volume of oil.

This - do what the manual states: check 15 minutes after shutting the motor down after a drive. If the level is between the holes - you are good, period.

Cold: I can see an oil level
Warm: I can't tell where the oil level is anyway

Factory reccomendation as several others have said. After checking the oil hot, cold, warm...you name it, I've finally settled on checking it 15 mins after I shut it down from running temp and that seems to me to be the most accurate and that's the only way I check it now.

Checking the oil warm is a huge pain, pop the hood right away to let the bay cool down so you don't fry yourself after a hot summer drive and then you have to check a few times because the oil is so hard to see the actual level on the dipstick.

Modern synthetic oil kinda sucks to read off of the dipstick!

I find if I don’t wait the full 15 minutes I get the schmear on the dipstick. Will stick with this as that’s what the manual recommends.

Mobil say's!!! "before turning on the engine or 5 to 10 minutes after shutting down so you can have all the oil in the oil pan to get an accurate measurement." I always check before starting and use my last service as a reference point that way I know what 10qts of oil looks like on the dipstick.

Bingo, that's the thing for me.
I would think a ref point when its cold should be good to go by?
Obviously much easier to try to an eye on. Who wants to stop, wait 18 mins, and then go chk your oil.

Even after 10 mins or 20 mins I still think there is oil still accumulating in the pan.

I am going to check it cold and then warm again.
I still think it was higher cold then warm, but I could be wrong.
