Mine have some padding wrapped over some of the ribs. I'll dig them out and post a picture. Yours don't appear to have that Dave.

okay that makes sense , I knew I read TSB online about added foam. I was surprised mine had the "foam" since the caps I purchased second hand was sent to the owner after delivery because they available when the first convertibles were made.

Would love to see this. My local dealer isn't playing ball with a replacement, and if I can address the issue myself and prevent damage to the roof, that would be ideal. Thanks in advance.

So I had a chance to look at my roof. This is the drivers side pic. In the first pic, it shows where on the roof is the tear.
Is this where everyone is having this happen?

I don't have that on my roof portion, but I have a nick just like that around my rear window. Uh Oh.

Just checked my roof and covers. Roof is fine....no marks/cuts at all. And my covers have the foam inserts. BTW, my car was a late 2016 build.

Yep and because it’s on the seam it will eventually go. The only reason why I got mine replaced was because it would eventually fail completely and if it did that out of warranty it would be an eye watering amount of money.

Red the foam inserts;

Both designs have foam, so you can’t just tell by looking at that. The amount and shape of foam plus the strengthening ribs moulded into the plastic is what changes between the two designs. I didn’t know they were going to be replaced until I did some digging after I noticed the caps on the new roof were different. By that point the old caps and old roof had already been sent off back to Ford otherwise I’d have got a comparison photo.

Edit to add: 6 months in the dealer and now got a dent in the car from the work being done to sort out. No way, not a chance, am I fitting the caps. I’ll hoover the mechanism out occasionally but I am not going to risk going through that experience again.

Could you put ups a pic or two of your covers, just for a comparison?? Thanks

Now I’m really baffled
And I have the same foam on my covers

That tear shown by Lightning is exactly like mine.

here's what I did:
look at 300Mag's picture: see the 12 ribs below where the foam is? I lightly sanded them down, then applied black mystic tape over them to prevent any cutting of the roof. I have not had any more cuts since then. Also...my left side of the roof sits slightly higher than the right side thus, applying more tension to the tonneau cover. To level out the roof was a real PIA requiring the dealer to send it out. I said, NO...and just trimmed the tonneau covers.

Seconded. Just looked at my covers and they look exactly as the ones posted by Fordever above. My doorsill sticker says "Date 6/17" so I'm assuming that's the build date for my car?

I would love to see what changes from one to the other so we can figure out what needs to be trimmed/etc. My covers were bought new off eBay, and I've only ever used them at a couple of car shows, so they've had a couple of hours of use and they look new. I intend to keep using them at shows so I want to avoid issues. If they replace the roof under warranty I don't care. I have other cars I can drive in the meantime. But if I can avoid that headache, i'd love to do so.

I’ll get some pictures posted.

I don’t believe having the covers in when the car is static is a problem, I’ve yet to see or hear of anyone who only fits them as static show items have this issue, it’s only when you drive and get movement through the car that I’ve heard it causes issues. However, I could be wrong, it could be fitting them is enough movement to damage the roof.
