Right, pictures as promised. I’m not sure how many I can attach to a single post so work with me on this, if it takes a few posts to get all the pictures up I’ll put a few posts up.

As you can see there’s extra foam blocks and extra felt covering one of the edges. These weren’t present on my first ones and don’t appear to be present on the images put up a few posts above, so to me, it’s clear that the parts have been changed and Ford won’t pay to make a change unless they need to. The felt needed sticking back down already so there’s a good chance that’ll just drop off and cause the same damage :crying: The top/outer A surfaces haven’t changed, so when fitted you shouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

Part number of my new caps
Right Hand: FR3B - 7631002 - CEW
Left Hand: FR3B - 7631003 - CEW

NOTE: base part number is the difference, which identifies the two parts from being LH and RH. “CE*” suffix says this is at least the 5th revision of these parts that have been formally released within Ford (this WILL span across all prototype and production, but also note that properly prototype parts may not have even had an official part number change as they go through lots of local revisions until they get to something they’re happy to formally release onto the prototypes or into production)

To me, that says they’ve had a few stabs at getting the design of these right even before the Mustang originally launched in 2015.

Further:

The parts posted by Fordever are CC suffix, so two revisions behind mine.

My partner was an automotive plastics engineer in the industry and has found two more bits of felt and changes to the plastic ribbing where the tool has been modified to give more clearance between the cap and the roof.

So, quite a few changes!

Thanx Tim for the pics. I will be updating/modifying my covers before I use them again. I am appreciative of your postings regarding this issue, as well I am sure other “verters” here are as well. :like:

Interesting. Mine has CEW etched on the plastic. But the sticker says CD3ZHE.

I just hope this helps at least some people out so they don’t end up with a damaged roof and having to go through what I’ve been through.

Also, at least you have the part numbers when talking to the dealers now too!

Sorry for the delay in posting the promised picture. Mine appear to be as Tim_ has posted. I can’t read the part number as the sticker is located partway under the small foam block. Without going and looking, I believe that my car was an early May, 2018 build date

Part number should be moulded into the plastic in the section at the top of your picture

I believe the changes happened at least half way through the 2017MY production run but in time for the facelifted 18MY’s.

In any event, I only put them on if I'm going for a long drive, am taking a nice picture of the car or at a cruise/show'n'shine. I don't use them for the commute as I typically put the top up in the drive at home and am too lazy to have to get out to remove them.

I have a late-build 2017 convertible, my caps are still in their plastic bag!

Am a bit confused as to what the Part Numbers of the modified caps are?

Thanks in advance for the clarification...

Mike

I think the part numbers of the Tim_'s new tonneau covers are actually:
Left side: FR3B-7631003-CE3ZHE
Right side: FR3B-7631002-CE3ZHE

Those appear to be the numbers on the white labels in his photos. I'd ask the dealer for the above numbers or a later design.

My left side tonneau cover has the part number that Tim_ indicated molded into it (FR3B-7631003-CEW), but mine doesn't have the small block of foam or the felt. I think the part number on the label is what you want. It appears to be an ASSEMBLY part number, which includes the hard plastic part (FR3B-7631003-CEW), the large foam block, the small foam block, and the felt.

My left side tonneau cover came from dealer service part inventory in March 2018. Your dealer might still be carrying this "intermediate" design.

Thanks for this thread. It's a great heads-up.

As an alternative to full replacement, has anyone found a good repair product to keep the damage from getting worse?

As a preventative measure, a few pieces of foam placed on the cap might help. I have the old style and I won't use them now unless I do something like that. I really never used them anyway.
