There is a great deal of validity to that statement. It is normal human behavior when they see something to associate it something that they already know. Something familiar to them. This is very common in the automotive world. When I first saw the Scion FR-S it looked like a rehashed 370Z to me. Other people insisted that it looked nothing like the 370Z. I don't care what they say though, I see a 370Z when I look at that car. When people see a new car for the first time the first thing that their brain will do is try to categorize it as something that they already know. This allows them to put the car in context and a frame of reference. So to those of you that are seeing a Fusion you are correct and those of you that are seeing a refreshed S197, you are also correct.
I have never seen 370Z in a Toyota 86.

It's ok if you don't. It's just what I see. It looks like a slightly reworked 370Z to me. When I look at the renders of the S550 I see a slightly reworked S197.

Crap. Now I sort of see it. Oh well, I'd drive both of those cars, except the Toyota has NO power and the 370Z has no space.

Wait. What are we agreeing/disagreeing about again?
As sexy as the Aston is,do we really want a "mini me" of this car with a Ford badge on it? We already have an Aston inspired car with a Ford badge on it.

In the 49 years of evolution has the mustang ever "cloned" or had design cues from another Ford or let alone another car maker? If this car stands alone,it may sell less units, good business to "clone" a popular "expensive" car like the Aston, will sell more cars,in Europe for sure,North America probably

Win on Sunday sell on Monday used to work, now having all cars look alike seems to be the norm.

Yes, and Yes. The original Mustang took styling cues from expensive European/Italian sports cars that Edsel Ford had seen on Vacation in Europe, right down to it's long hood short deck silhouette, but most notably it's Ferrari inspired grill, it's side sculpture/C scoops which mimicked brake ducts, it's rounded fastback roofline and roof vents behind the door windows were all borrowed from Other more Expensive European sports cars, even the Coupe's square formal roofline was designed to look like the widely copied 58-63 Thunderbird's roofline.

In 79 the Fox Body Mustang again drew inspiration from European cars with it's Angular Arerodynamic styling under the design direction of Jack Telnack. It also was designed with Ford's Corporate Image in mind with it's 4 rectangular sealed beam headlights and eggcrate grill. It bore striking similarities to other Fords of the time such as the Escort. In 87 it again adopted Ford's Corporate Face with Big Square Flush European Inspired Aerodynamic Headlights and Grill less front end, like the Thunderbird, Tempo, Escort, EXP etc.

So to answer your questions Boss, that would be a resounding Yes, not to mention that all of those Mustangs were Very Popular and Sold In Record Numbers.

A Mustang body similar to the Aston or Jag would be the sexiest beast on the road. Just chunk it up a little with a couple hard lines to make it look mean and we've got a winner!

Taking style cues you like is one thing, cloning something is different. As far as shared grilles/headlights,corporate recognition is important for sales,I understand that. The mustang has had it's own identity from day one, more of what I was saying

The Fairlane/Galaxie/Falcon of the 60's all had similar design, body lines, grilles and tail-lights each with their own identity. I owned a 64 fairlane for years, would never own a galaxie though, just too big.

Wow, what a thrill ride. I've read and enjoyed a lot snarky, canny, gushing, hate-fueled, and funny comments today. By far, the family here has been mostly kind and respectful, even if they don't like them. My favorite was someone at jalopnik posted a screencap of my comments here, then the next user jokingly dinged me for using the word "gestalt" Actually laughed out loud. I have a pretty thick skin about all of this. I can take it. I stand by what I did and have already admitted it isn't perfect by far, and probably wrong in places. The hateful comments directed at me personally (autoblog commenters were particularly harsh) made me roll my eyes, smirk, and let it wash right over me.

Thanks again for the supporters (and even detractors) here at M6G.

More to come. Hopefully here in my home thread.

Glad you can take some of the comments with a grain of salt -- you have done amazing work, and while some may not like what is probably pretty darn close to what the actual car looks like, it has nothing do do with your skills.

If anything, they should be mad at Ford, not the messenger.

The internet can be a pretty vitriol filled place, glad to see you have such a good attitude about it chaz.

Whether we like the design or not, I think we can all agree at how skillfully rendered these are and judging by what peabody and others have said, it sounds like you got pretty close..... I'm really looking forward to your updates.

+1000 While the design is not exactly what I was hoping for ( I admit to liking Tampabear67's design more), the skill and sleuth work to come up with this is nothing short of amazing.

Good man, Chazcron. That was well said and you are obvioulsy a good sport about things. I will echo my comments from another thread, your 3D rendering skills speaks for itself. There will always be haters for something, you gotta let em be.
