I changed the oil on K3107 today. The car has 1,877 miles on it. I took the entire cover off the oil access area. I used the Motorcraft 500s filter. Mobil 1.

The oil was the color of tea. I also noticed the engine uses what looks like the Boss 302 oil cooler.

The filter surprised me. Why such a small oil filter? Has anyone else seen this?

Yep, I replaced the OE minifilter with the larger Ford Performance filter at 1,100 miles. I used Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-20, but Mobil 1 is equally good. I cut the filter apart and searched for metal; i found one small piece of non-ferrous swarf... but nothing of note.

But, why such a small garden tractor filter?

Good point. I checked the dipstick. The new oil was very hard to see. It did look a little low. Before I changed it, I warmed the car up and noticed an intermittent noise from the front of the engine. Almost like a belt squeak. Hard to describe. In all my mustangs, never heard this type of noise before. Anyway, after I changed the oil and warmed the engine this noise was not present. Not sure what it was.

I still do not understand the reason for the mini-filter. Assuming if the first batch of oil was run for 10K miles, it would be the dirtiest. Bizarre.

I had my oil changed a few days ago too. The different size oil filters are a head scratcher to me. You'd think it would throw the car off to go from one to the other.

There must be a reason; my Ram 5.7l Hemi 4x4 pick-up has an oil filter about the size of our OE Bullitt filter. I'm guessing the answer is "it's big enough to do the job"

Just checked by dealer invoice for my dealer oil change last week and the filter installed is also the FL500S.

The original filter was the diameter of the 500s but the length of the 820s. I still don't understand why.

I'm trying to think out of the box here in regards to people who say that the tick starts after the first oil change.

It seems to me that the smaller OE filter would contribute to higher oil pressure than the FL500S that has a larger volume.

I could be totally wrong about this though.
