Laser Brazing and Low Gauge Panels???

Laser brazing is probably replacing the old Silicone Bronze process of putting the roof on.

...and Low gauge panels... Something worth noting here. The hydro-forming process allows Ford to change the gauge of the metal used without ANY retooling for the stamping process. Reduced weight, cost, stronger, lighter and pretty awesome.I don't think the roof is Hydro-Formed but, you can see low gauge panels coming to newer cars. I would also bet that thinner glass is also being used (eventually at least).

Hood design has probably been dictated by pedestrian safety laws... Anyone who has played Grand Theft Auto will tell you that you can kill more people with a car than any other weapon in the game... The hood is now a very important part of the crash test (windshield too) and, deserves just as much attention as the chassis. You will see that the Steel hood gained 11lbs...

Thanks for all of this interesting information. The complexity is astonishing.

There are finally moves underway to make European and US standards the same, so the region-specific parts could be eliminated, making vehicles less expensive for people in both places. Of course, that has been mainly talk for decades, but it may finally happen.

Blah, blah, blah!!! What's it all mean. Well, just based on the short slide show, there were significant increases in stiffness.

Typically, 1-3% can be achieved between model years with some extra stiffening here and there. That's just in a specific location where overall, the effects are much less. A 3% increase by using the Boss 302LS's X bar will probably translate to less than a fraction of a percent overall.

You can see the "Lion's Foot" adds about 25% stiffness in it's specific location, but helped with the 10.5% stiffness and the 8.9% torsion rating increase.

Altogether, this is the computer designed, Silhouette Innovation or Fastback of the future. The entire car works together on impact to protect the occupants. The by product of a car shaped like a bullet is very high stability in both the aero department and extreme chassis stiffness for performance applications.

Just a quick safety tip, an impact from a 2013+ Ford into your pre-2012 automobile will result in your fatality, Older automobiles just cannot absorb and resist impact like new cars.

Mid 90's to 2012, impact absorption was the main stream way to deal with a collision, in the 60's to early 90's, impact resistance was used. Big steel reinforcements and such also dictated the exterior design. Now, new cars both absorb, resist and transfer energy all at once.

In closing...

I'm not confirming the S550 will be based on the CD391 ('11-'12 Mondeo) or the CD4 or CD4.1/.2. I'm just merely connecting the dots... The S550 mule was spotted with pretty much an exact IRS system that is outlined in the Integral Link IRS of the '13 Fusion/Mondeo so, it starts to make sense. Is there a possibility that both S550Boss and Overboost were correct? Well.... Yes and no...

Is there a possiblitiy that Ford chose to use the floorpans and such from the existing S197 to evolve the S197? Maybe... It sure wouldn't be an evolution of the S197, it would be double dipping into the bin though and could save HUGE money. In fact, there is a possibility that the S550's chassis was derived first and then the Fusion/Mondeo acquired the chassis so that R&D started on the Mustang 1st.

Could the S550 chassis end up being a heavily modified CD4 chassis that uses the old S197's bits like the '13 Mondeo used the '11's floor pans? Sure, it is possible.

Is it even more possible that the S550 uses unique structures to fill in the gaps? Yeah, that's possible as well.

You know, the new Ford Edge and S-Max are based on the CD4... Does that make them the new Fusion SUV and Fusion Van? No... There is no relation.

The new Taurus might use the CD4 in 2016... Does that make it a full size, 4 door Mustang?

Was the 1964 1/2 Mustang 2+2 a Falcon Coupe?

I was making a funny :-) As I suspect you've seen in some forum comments, there are those who are lamenting the front-end styling being related to the Fusion. Hence, my post was an attempt to make a reference to that.
