Yes the C5Z will be faster stock for stock. Very cool we are mentioning the 15 with this car.

Ok, there is a reason that C5 Z06s run in Super Stock in Solo II while Mustangs are in F Stock... the Z's simply outhandle them, quite easily. If you don't think that wider tires (275 fronts and 295 rears, F1 Supercars), much lower weight (mine scaled at 3080 pounds with half tank of gas) AND lower center of gravity don't make for a gocart like ride, you are delusional.

I mean come on, I really like my S550, but the Z06 was lightened and built with the idea of an instant track monster. It comes with NO sound deadening, engine oil cooler, brake ducts, larger radiator, and a whole lot more.

It rides rough, lacks many creature comforts, and has a chintzy interior... but it works very well at what it was designed to do. Plus it had a HUD as factory option... 15 years ago.

S550 kills it for ride comfort, interior/cargo room, technology, interior, and every other daily use factor. But it is not equal in handling without a crap ton of modifications, which would end up removing a lot of the advantages above.

Be proud of your car, but don't let pride get in the way of reality when you start bragging.

Having owned both I have to agree that the only real comparison between the 2 would be straight line acceleration.

My 2002 Z06 was faster stock to stock that the stang I have now. that said I have run 2 as of today and it was much closer than the video the OP is discussing. I ran a 2003 that a buddy of mine owns and where we ended depended on his shifting. From a dig into 4th I was either at his door or his rear bumper. Both cars are running wide rears but not DR's. DR's make a huge difference on the Z06 of that generation. I've yet to see similar responsiveness from the Mustang. To clarify that last statement DR's on a 2002-2004 Z06 would drop times from 12.2-12.3 stock down to 11.7-11.8. I have yet to see tires alone drop the current stang .5.

My 2002 weighed in at 3030 on the scales compared to my current Stang at 3678. I have just a Premium GT Auto with Nav.

Suspension comparison would be like comparing a Honda Accord to a Miata. Miata being the Z06. This comparison would be for suspension only.

All that said I am very impressed with the new mustang. For what I plan on doing (street and drag strip) it should be able to beat a c5 Z06 with only minor modification. It is definitely quieter, safer, and more comfortable than my Z06 could ever hope to be. I like to consider it my next stage in vehicle evolution.

The C5 Z06 is considered the performance bargain of used cars. If you are looking for a relatively pure and simple performance car, you cannot beat it. Just don't expect total comfort and coddling, do expect awesome handling and great power to weight, but few electronic nannies to save you if you go bugnuts with it.

C5 VS GT/GTPP

c5 with lite mods will take a 2015GT Does not have to be a zo6. I own 08GT, my brother took out a 2015GT (maybe not the PP w/aggressive diff) by at least 2-3 car lengths. Only mods on his C5 are short headers, intake and race tune. Will be trading in for a 2015/2016 but sad to know a c5 will/could out run me stock.

Sad indeed. It's a shame how heavy these cars are!

When I installed my front eibachs a few weeks ago I noticed that the front spindles and control arms are all iron and steel. Haven't seen that on a sports car in a long time! I took that as an indication that they did not really even consider weight.

Definitely agree with you on weight. Smart move with the SC. Gonna be tough on the streets especially if the 2016 camaro outruns stock GT with the base v8 setup coming from the new vette. The new 2015GT is great, don't get me wrong, but should not have to purchase a GT350 to beat a base camaro. We'll see.

With a tune on a stock 15 GT you would walk a c5 vette all day (stock) and most likely a c5z by a car. It would at least be close. These new(ish) v8s get a lot out of a tune. Hell, most guys are getting 30+whp in these cars now on a tune alone. I'd like to see a tune only 15GT run a stock c5z. My money is on the GT with a similar driver.

I've had several Vette's, still have two (a modified 1994 ZR1 and a 1978). The C5 Z06 handled better and was a bit faster. Basic C5's are not as fast (had a convertible A5 with basic bolt on's). The S550 reminds me power wise of my old ZR1 pre mod (and seems to run similar time slips given stock tires), and hopefully after some mods it'll handle about as well (before I modified the Z). Really though, right now my S550 is more reminiscent of an SL550... which I like :)

Oh man! I want one of those just to say I have one. That and a cyclone for "dreams when I was a kid" fulfillment lol.

Curious, off topic sorry but you got my attention, where in the heck do you find mods for that one off thing?

I m guessing if it was a 3.55 auto mustang gt then things might have ended up differently. The stock 0-60 and quarter miles for the zo6 is 3.9 sec and 11.9 sec!
Auto/3.55 should help from a dig maybe but from a roll the MT82 with 3.55 and 3.73 still has more gear between 2nd-5th gears than the 6R80 with 3.55's.

Funny people say the quickest stock GT's in a straight line are the PP and auto with 3.55's but the fastest stock GT ive seen posted on these forums is a non PP GT base manual with 3.55's which ran a 12.5@115 with a mediocre 60ft in decent air on the crappy 18in all seasons...

To beat a stock c5Z06 the GT will need a good tune, full exhaust and driver mod.

I had Caravaggio in Canada do mine because of his interior work, but all the major Corvette tuners had mods for them (Mallet, Lingenfelter, etc) plus some specialty guys in the LT5 community. I had the LT5 pushed to 368cu. with stronger internals, full bolt ons, replaced the suspension with adjustable coil overs, 6 piston from /4 piston rear adj. brakes, full leather, etc. Went kind of nuts :) but should have gone for the 415cu. instead of interior upgrades.. would have had ~600 naturally aspirated ponies. Still, @~450rwhp with that chassis and braking like it hits a wall it's fun. Needs a rebuilt Trans now though. .. got too addicted to dropping two gears and flooring it to hear that lt5 scream and didn't have that done up front.
