Brake Dust Answer?

So I tried this stuff out. I would say it worked well but it's a trial and error type of product. I did drive 35 miles of HARD aggressive city driving and when I made it back home I had a cloud of brake dust on the wheels as opposed to the usual thick layer of brake dust on the wheels. So yes it does work. I did see brake dust clumped up on the inside of the barrels but the spokes/outside wheels looked good enough for me to continue use. Now the process of using the product was taxing. I washed the car on Friday 4pm. Left the wheels/barrels spotless. Sprayed the product in a mist like style making sure to get every part of the wheels. Product goes on wet. Let it dry for 2hrs and came back to check how it looked. Few streaks of product running down the spokes on all wheels. Enough to say "I won't drive with my wheels looking like this" so I let it sit in my garage till Sunday morning. Took a clean white t shirt and sprayed the product lightly on the t shirt and allowed it to almost dry but not fully...just damp enough to allow me to wipe the streaks away yet trying my best not to remove the product. Next time I think I will not spray so closely or either use a bit less product? Maybe less is more? I feel the longer the product sits on the wheels before driving the better it works. Either way def worth the $10.

A very accurate review. My experience was identical. The stuff works, but it's not a user friendly process. It left whire streaks, but once wiped down, the product was still effective.

So after 3 weeks of driving around with this stuff on my wheels, i finally decided to clean the wheels using Mothers wheel cleaner.

I intentionnaly did not recoat the wheels to see if it would still protect against brake dust after cleaning the wheels.

Well it did not hold very well, after a short drive i noticed the wheels were as dusty as before.

So if you want this stuff to last on your wheels, i would recommend not cleaning
them with anything than a mist of water and avoid any wheel cleaning agent.

Speaking of that i have to go pressure wash the car since i drove in the rain the other day. :tsk:

This is my experience as well. A light wipe-down with water is fine, but anything harsher will take this product off the wheels and you'll have to start over.

After over 1200 miles, mostly highway though, my PP wheels with this stuff on still look great. It worked so well I washed the car but skipped doing the wheels. I order it from Walmart for in store pick up for about $5.50 a can. Love this stuff.

We are talking about brake dust here, but is the dust making my brakes squeak? I hear them a lot when slowing at light. What is best remedy?

You can try making a few hard stops from high speed to clean up the rotor/pad interface, though it may just be the nature of the pads. Mine squeak a fair amount but I sort of like it.

I can tell you that CQuartz alone is not enough. I took my wheels off the car and applied two coats of CQuartz to each of them. I can't tell that it made any difference in the brake dust at all. I have some of the Armor All product, but I haven't tried it yet. When I do, I'll definitely report back.

Follow up as promised:

I applied the product about a six weeks ago. I had the wheels/tires off the car to clean them thoroughly for an upcoming show, and sprayed them inside and out while they were still off the car. After six weeks and three washes, the product is still going strong. I don't accumulate nearly the brake dust that I did with no coating or even CQuartz alone.

I don't even wash the wheels at all. What little dust is there comes off with just a spray of water. I don't know if it is the combination of CQuartz and Armor All Outlast, but the treated surface is EXTREMELY hydrophobic, which I assume is the reason brake dust doesn't stick to it much either. It does still stick to the tires, especially in the area between the wheel and the protection lip on the tire. But I just wash that area as normal, and blow the wheels dry with my electric leaf blower, and I'm very pleased with the results.

I have had the same results over the past 2000 miles. The wash before last I skipped cleaning the wheels. It only takes a medium coat of the Armor All to get good results.

Has anyone put Powerstop ceramic pads (Z17) on their front brakes? The reviews say it cuts down on the dust mostly and gets rid of noise. I don't track my 350 btw.
