BG Syncro Shift II from Optimum Performance

I put bg synchro shift in mine as soon as I picked up the car. Can't comment on how it changed because I literally drove it from the ford dealer to my shop which is an 1/8 mile away before changing fluid. But it shifts like butter and sounds quite aside from the throw out bearing

I may need to look into this fluid change. Not to happy with the shifting in my transmission.

You mentioned the TOB noise. I get an occasional strange noise and am wondering if it might be a TOB as well. Kind of like a quiet belt squeak but again, it's only here and there (for now). Did you do anything about it? Take it to Ford? Should that be covered under warranty?

EDIT: If it could potentially be covered under warranty, should I hold off making the fluid change?

EDIT 2: After reading a bit more into it, it sounds like some are saying that some Ford service departments actually use the BG fluid so actually I'm assuming it should not have any negative warranty impacts. It's because of the warranty that I've been holding off on tuning the car and going crazy with mods. May have to take it in for this sound I'm hearing but definitely gotta get this fluid swapped in to hopefully fix this MT-82!

Well I have bg fluid, steeda instert, and going to install my mgw as soon as I get the shorter handle put on. Wonder I'd I need the ss clutch line.....hmmm

If you do not have exact amount of fluid measured, how you determine the amount to put it ? Manual says level of fluid (for GT) needs to 0.5 inch below the filler hole, but it's pretty much impossible to look in there and I find it impossible to stick finger in there. Any ideas ?

We have not verified it, but you can use a tie-wrap (Zip Tie) like we use in our Rear Axle Kit to check it.

This is new information in the 2016 Service Manual. You can try it and report back but as you said, close to impossible to get an accurate reading. The pump hose barely fits in the fill hole.

Take a plastic tie wrap as pictured and mark it with a range of .275"-.511". The fluid needs to end up there. Bend the end of the tie-wrap and heat the bend slightly (a lighter works) It will help maintain the shape of the bend at a 90.

We still feel our measured out method is just more reliable due to the lack of room to do much near the fill plug area.

Basically Ford doesn't want you to over-fill it.

We will try to verify it this weekend and add it to our kits if it seems reliable.

The other option is to drain out the fluid into a clean container, measure the volume you need; 2.6L, and pump it back in.

Level Comparisons

We used a 1 gallon milk container to illustrate what the difference in fill quantities really are. It is exaggerated in the milk container due to the smaller surface area. The transmission fill levels would be less pronounced.

We marked off 1Liter, 2Liters, 2.6Liters and 2.8Liters(3 qts.) The bottle starts necking down so it is a slightly more pronounced change.

We also marked off 1Liter and 200ml to show the difference of level where the bottle is the same shape and volume. It just so happens this is exactly the range of 10MM +/-3MM given in the new fill check procedure from Ford.

Obviously 200mL will not change the level in the transmission by the same amount as a 1 gallon milk container. Our point is to illustrate that in this case close enough will get you to where you need to be.

200mL is about 7 ounces rounded off. It's what is left over from our kit. The difference between 2.8L/3qts./96ounces and the fill specification of 2.6L

Thanks a lot - all makes sense. Interestingly manual (2015 user's manual) says that for V6 and Eco to fill all the way to the hole, for GT - half inch below - I'm guessing due to higher temperatures and thermal expansion of the fluid.

What manual are you referring to? The Factory Shop Manual does not differentiate between the engines, all the transmissions hold the same amount of fluid therefore should be filled in the same manner.

For vehicles with a the I4 or V6 engine, the correct manual transmission fill level is at the lower edge of the filler hole. For vehicles equipped with a V8 engine, the correct manual transmission fill level is 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) below the edge of the filler hole.

BTW - I appreciate answering questions asked by somebody that isn't a customer yet. Intending on buying differential fluid because of that.

Interestingly on-line manual at owner.ford.com right now says this :

The correct fluid fill level is –3 mm below the bottom edge of the filler hole.

with no mention of engine models.

Yep, very odd. I have that manual right next to me. Never saw it isted in there. I always went by the serivce manual. Thanks for pointing it out. Attached is the factory method that was not in the original 2015 downloads, but are now in 2015-2016 that we have.


EDIT: Just found the online version, it looks like they standardized the fill, lowered the level slightly and raised it on the V8. 3mm (.119")below is basically filling so it doesn't pour out.
