For MT cars, what is the best way to let off from a hard pull? Do you stay on gear? Dump the clutch on the next higher gear? or do you skip two gears up? Same gear and Next gear sounds glorious but needlessly strains the engine imo. Skipping up 2 gears leads to a smoother coast but I find that I slip the clutch almost every time. I may be doing it wrong. I’m interested in finding out how everybody else does it.

It depends what I feel like.
Skip gears.
Neutral and coast.
Neutral ->Coast->Downshift.
Brake->Downshift->Repeat.
Stay in gear and coast.
Stay in gear->Coast->Neutral ->brake.
Brake hard->Downshift through the gears.

On drag strip runs, I normally cross the stripe, lift off the throttle, put the tranny in neutral, coast/brake and then downshift into 2nd gear as I turn off of the track and onto the return road.

This is how I've always done it:

Say I've just finished my pull and I'm at the top of 4th... I'll make a quick shift up to 5th to take the rpms down and reduce the high load off the engine, while simultaneously laying on the brakes to bring the vehicle speed back down as quickly as possible. Doing it this way keeps the car always in a gear and under control, and it also let's my victim know the run is over once he sees my brake lights. Haha

Step by step:

1. Lift off throttle
2. Push in clutch and brake simultaneously
3. Upshift and let the clutch out while continuing to brake

I agree with keeping it in gear to maintain control. I find that if I coast in neutral I have to guestimate my rev match to re-engage the tranny vs doing it in stride with the pull . Also, I think it keeps the pumps flowing faster to protect the engine. The only potential problem with braking is it shows everybody behind you where the thunderous sound just came from. Could be good. Could be bad.

Sort of related question: when launching it in 1st, when do you shift to second? Sounds dumb, but the revs will climb to 7.5k or so super quick, but the wheels are probably still spinning a bit/not full traction by that point.

What I actually want to know: do you keep it in 1st full throttle until they catch up (basically hitting the limiter), or do you just shift to 2nd the instant you hit 7.5k (or whatever your rev limit is)

yeah you generally don't want to be moving at speed in neutral for longer than the time to shift. That leaves you in a lurch if you need to make a maneuver with throttle. (Don't go to neutral to coast down as you're coming to a stop, etc.)

Clutch in but still in a gear is a judgement call. I would not prefer to let the car coast down to idle RPM while you're travelling at high speed, because that also increases the risk of getting it back into gear in a hurry.

So upshift one or two gears, whatever way is natural and smooth for you.

A stickier tire will help with wheel spin, but even then, you will still get some spin (more or less spin) based on launch rpm. Here’s an example of me launching off the rev limiter at 7900. Notice how there is wheel spin, but the tires start to bite and you can hear the engine being pulled down slightly.

I like to shift when my shift light illuminates at 7200 rpm. By the time I complete the shifts the rpm’s have climbed an additional 300-400 rpm.

The auto's hold the gear, drives me nuts.

That is how FOrd does it.

Grab 75% throttle to get into traffic, let off and it holds the gear for 4 or 5 seconds before it up shifts.

He‘s definitely on top of his game! I think he also has another video our there of his GT350 with lots of enhancements to help propel it down the 1/4 mile.
