Great video. I am probably gonna buy a bottle of Ceratec and just have it ready after the first oil change.
I've used a product called Archoil 9100 for probably the last 10-12 yrs in all my vehicles. My vettes, grand national, and camaros that I've owned. Those engines relied heavily on zinc with flat tappet lifters. Everything is roller now so they pulled the zinc out of the oils. Very high boron content, does not discolor oil. I'll use that first if I have to. The stuff works great.

Has anybody waited the full 10k miles for the first oil change as per the owner manual? I have a ‘21 and I am wondering if changing it prior could be the cause.

No, the timing of your 1st oil change has nothing to do with it. As mentioned many times the tick is there in all motors. It’s just more audible on many cars. Totally inaudible on others.

This said I would suggest not waiting until 10k. I do mine once a year as I travel less than 5k in that time. I used to do oil changes every 2k but todays engines and lubricants do not require that. I would recommend 5k.

My only thought was my Mercedes dealer refused to do the first oil change prior to the scheduled 10k. It was a S63 Cabriolet. My only thought is, why do the manufacturers insist on this when it’s a customer expense? That was a 603 up twin turbo.

Because it was a Mercedes  Kidding, a little. A dealer may refuse to do a “scheduled service early. But if your willing to pay for it I cannot see any dealer say no.

Could the sophisticated oil and filtration of today cars have something to do with it? Thus requiring a longer break in? I questioned if this could be a contributing factor to the tick. It appears in most posts the first oil was done <3k miles. Just a thought.

The break in period really isn’t affected by the oil or filter. Those you have gotten the tick after the initial change have changed their oil at various intervals.

We all have been trying to understand this issue by coming up with every possible contributing factor. The variables involved prevent us from coming to a reliable conclusion.

First oil change at 3.7k miles, synthetic oil, no tick. Knock (tick) on wood.

The 10k mile oil changes set / recommended by manufacturers is only there to reduce their carbon footprint of the vehicle. Less petroleum products used per vehicle helps them comply with govt standards, that includes engine, trans, diff, and any other "oil" product consumed for routine maintenance. My '21 us at 1600 miles, normally i would have changed out the oil already, but it hasn't even started to discolor yet. I commute with it, mostly highway miles. Unless something changes drastically i'll have it changed at 3k.

I've heard the tick come and go. It was there, then after the engine warmed up, it was gone. 🤷‍♂️

That makes sense, but aren’t most lubricants recycled? I have rented several GT’s and I’m sure the rental companies adhere to the manufacturer’s schedule and none of them had the tick. They ranged in miles from 12k-35k . It makes u wonder.

I have never heard the tick in person, only videos. Ive heard lots of differnt engine metal on metal sounds before from multiple manufactures and sizes. This sounds like a lifter to me, not a rod, bearing, piston slap, or anything in the lower end, somehow a plastic oil pan is going to change the sound a rod knock or lose piston makes? I dont buy that. At the end of the day im going to have to "keep" my factory warranty longer than i would have liked and postpone the power mods i had planed, after all its a daily driver for me.
