I have this one on an Optima Red Top (disconnected from vehicle):

I’ve always connected the tender’s clips directly to the correct battery posts and I’ve never had any issues with maintaining the battery or its performance.

With car batteries, it's a good idea to always connect red first, then negative (black). And to disconnect, the reverse.
