This thread is ez, don't granny shift and always double clutch like you should.

Double clutching is 100% not necessary in a 15' Mustang. Not trying to start $h@&, don't read this the wrong way. This one has been proven wrong a million times over...don't want the newbies to think they have to do that.

It's definitely a preference so more power to anyone who WANTS to double clutch, I personally hate doing it (can you tell? Lol)

1) You don't need to double-clutch a modern synchromesh transmission. (Brake)-Clutch in - select -blip-clutch out. You'll figure it out once you realize your not going to blow up the engine up when you goose it a little.

2) Take out the clutch assist spring. Really. Otherwise you'll spend the rest of your life fruitlessly looking for the bite point.

3) Hold the gas and slowly let out the clutch to pull away. You'll find out how fast you can smoothly do this (see bullet #2) with practice. Then work on co-ordinating the throttle with the clutch. Trying to dance with two feet feathering the throttle/clutch to keep the revs up is a recipe for frustration and slow take offs.

This can't be said enough. The F&F really did some bad teaching to a young and impressionable group of future auto enthusiasts

An argument can be made that double clutching also saves clutch. Matching the motor with Trans speed makes for less slippage and more even speeds when engaging the clutch. Simply blipping the throttle doesn't match the input shift speed to the desired gear. You're correct it's not necessary but I still do it for the satisfaction of knowing I can.

Indeed, I used to double clutch at track days and DD, but I was emphatically encouraged by instructors that there was no need, and an unnecessary distraction, in a modern passenger car. For an amateur, it just made the braking and turning manouver more complex than it needed to be and slowed you down. Now, if you are in an open wheel car, or a Fast and Furious movie, it is essential to double clutch to a) not wreck the tranny and b) be Vin Diesel. I was heavily invested in not having to change the clutch in my M3, just looking at the cost of parts made my sump squeak out a little oil!

Hey guys I have another question that's related. When sitting at the red light, do you guys put the gear in neutral? Or is leaving it in 1st while holding down the clutch okay?

Also in stop and go traffic, when you're crawling at 2mph, what do you do w/o riding the clutch?

Sitting on the clutch disengaged for long periods of time like that wears out your throwout bearing.

When crawling, if you don't want to ride the clutch - don't. Leave as much room as you can between you and the front car, modulating throttle in 1st to crawl as slowly as possible, without having to come to a stop. When you do have to stop, simply put into neutral and chill on the brake.

Otherwise, you're going to slip the clutch crawling/stopping/crawling.
