Avoiding LSPI with automatic & highway passing

Looking @ the blown ecoboost engine thread leads me to ask this question if you are @ highway speeds in the automatic what is the safe proper way to pass aggressively, I am in D mode not using Sport ?

Even in Drive mode you can simply click down to 5th gear quickly with the paddle shifter, give some gas and pass. The gear will return to 6th gear once the revs are relaxed
