I have 4 19" x 10" wheels and am thinking about running 284/40 19's on all 4 corners on my 2018 GT PP1. Has anyone out there tried this set up?

I was running 275/40r19 on 19x10's with a 40 mm offset on my 2017 GT. Had no issues at all, but I was also on stock suspension. I would think 285/40's would be no issue at all in the rear, and my gut feeling from my setup is they would be ok on the front also as the 285/40's aren't that much larger then the 275/40's, but I guess it would also depend on the offset of your wheels.

Thanks for your response.
I realize the 285/35 19's are popular, but maybe that's why some owners feel they must lower the front suspension of their cars once they go to the shorter tire. I'm okay with the ground clearance I have now with 255/40 19's in the summer and 265/40's in the winter. I think both of these are taller than 285/35 19's, and I'd rather not go square with either of these sizes.
Unfortunately, going square with 285/40 19's is expensive if it doesn't work very well. I'd rather not be the pioneer for this setup if there is someone out there that has tried it.

285/35 19 are 26.9 inches, 255/40 19 are 27.0 inches nominally. 275/40 19 are 27.7 inches and is what comes on the rear of PP1 cars. I can’t speak to this size and front strut clearance.

You can run a 275 tire on a x10 inch wheels depending on the brand/model of tire; look at the actual tread width rather than section width. For handling, smarter people than I suggest going up to 0.5 inch less tread width than wheel width.

Hi Doug,

I want to try running with a 43 mm offset if I stay with the 5 mm spacer I now have up front, but I'm willing to go to 3" studs and a 10 mm offset if that will let me fit the 285/40's upfront. Ideally, I'd like to go with a square setup using the new Michelin 285/40 19 A/S 4's that are just coming out. I understand Michelin may not have a 275/40 19 size in the new A/S 4's.

There is a second set of sizes coming out next year, but I can’t find the source where I saw that right now. Granted that’s probably mid summer which is a ways off.

Wow, that would be great if Michelin came out with a 275/40 19 A/S 4 later this year or early next year. I have already run a test putting my 275/40 summer tires on the front with 19" x 10" wheels (with 43 mm offset) and kept my 285/40 winter tires on the back. I drove around for about an hour with no problems at all before I went back to my regular setup.

Thanks for the information. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Michelin will realize that a number of us have 275/40 19 tires on our GTs and they work well on both the front and back.

285/35 has far better tire selection.
OP do a tire survey on Tirerack and filter by size. You should also find there is a price premium for the screwball 285/40 size. There isn't much point in fighting the 'standard' fitments the industry has gravitated toward. On a 10" just run 275/40 of which there are a plethora.

For example this https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Pirelli&tireModel=P+Zero+(PZ4)&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=74YR9PZ4XL&tab=Sizes
has a $60 difference between 275/40 and 285/40

285/35 isn’t noticeably short, but it always helps when you have some offset, fits the front well and the rear looks fine too. Try a set this time and see if you even notice.

305/30 OTOH actually looks short.

I second the 275/40 square route if you want a square tire setup. Pilot Sport A/S 3+ are great all season tires and are available in that size. I assume you want a square setup so you can rotate. Otherwise, go 265/40 in front and 275/40 or 285/40 in the rear if you want a slightly wider/taller taller out back. I would not like a 1"+ taller tire in the front. That would be all sidewall growth and I don't think that would look good. FWIW, I went with 19x10 all around and kept the stock PP1 tires (255/40 in front and 275/40 in rear). For the Pilot Sport 4S 255/40 tires, a 10" wide wheel is the max recommended wheel width. If you want less stretch, go with 265/40 in front. If I could customize my tire sizes precisely, I'd go with 260/39 in front and 285/38 in the rear. Obviously, those sizes don't exist but that's where I'd go if the choices were endless!

I thought the 275/40 19 A/S 3+ was being discontinued, and it didn't appear the new A/S 4 series was going to be available in that size. In the winter I'm running the 265/40's in the front and 285/40's in the rear. I love the set up but I have to store my other set of wheels and tires off site. At 73 years old I'm getting a little tired of changing the wheels and tires twice a year. That's why the A/S 4's seem appealing right now. When all this stuff is finally resolved next year I'll probably have 4 original PP1 wheels 9.5" x 19" available for sale. Until then I'll run the original PP1 tires on 9.5" x 19's in front (with 5mm spacers) and the replica 10" x 19's in the rear during the warmer months.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

no teenager with a mild interest in cars you can't rope into "on the job" training? You sit in lawn chair sipping bear while kid gets hands dirty.

Okay...now we're talking! But up here in Connecticut I think I'd rather be sipping "beers" not "bears".
