Has anyone left there stock mufflers and put a different mid muffler or resonator in place of the stock resonator. We have covered that the resonator delete doesn't do much for sound by itself but if replaced with say a flowmaster or borla resonator curious how it would sound.

I won't change it much, if at all. A local around here tried it and it was a wasted investment, imo. A Flowmaster will increase the tinny sound of the stock setup whereas a Magnaflow (or similar style) will muffle the tone down making it less tinny and more like breathing through a pillow kind of noise.

I actually just tried doing catless dp + reson delete + stock muffler and vargas stage 2 turbo on top of that about a couple weeks ago. One of the worst, if not the worst, exhaust setup.

I replaced the stock resonator with a magnaflow and ran straight pipes out the back. At idle it's not much louder, but when you get on it, it sounds much better than stock!

Do you still have the stock downpipe? I'm thinking about doing this but I have a Catless downpipe. My plan was to get a 3" in and a 2.25" out and then just buy a muffler delete kit, should cost about $500 total but worried about it being too loud. What resonator did you use?

I still have the stock downpipe. There is no resonator. The magnaflow muffler replaced the resonator.
I'm using 3" in and two 2@1/2" out. It's pretty simple really, the exhaust shop charged me $350, which included the 4" tips and the magnaflow muffler. A it's not too loud at all

Does the resonator (in stock form) have any effect on exhaust back pressure? Or is the sole purpose to just quiet the exhaust and tone down possible cabin exhaust noise?

If in factory form and design it plays a role in back pressure, wouldn't removing it create a possible loss in torque?

You dont want back pressure on a turbo motor only an NA motor. Back pressure is a restriction to the turbo and adds no benefit. Less backpressure in a turbo car allows the turbo to breathe better and spool quicker.

Good Question Cobra Jet I would like to know the answer to that also. I have a H-Pipe ready to go back on my car and I've been reading other posts trying to figure that out. It seems the way it is built that it does add some back pressure. (borrowed picture from TexasRebel
Based on that patent and the image I took of the OE resonator it appears to be a dual resonator. Two sets of perforations in each pipe, and a number of baffles. The flow-through nature of the pipe minimizes back pressure. It's not like a muffler which forces the full exhaust flow around baffles. It's an expansion chamber that captures the pressure wave of the exhaust valve opening event. Some back pressure is created when the expanded exhaust gasses exit the resonator, but very little, and even less as flow increases. With higher flow back pressure is created just by the friction and the curves in the exhaust pipe.

A turbo works most efficiently when you maximize the pressure differential across the turbine. The turbine creates back pressure for the engine, and you want as little resistance to flow after the turbine as you can get.

Not sure why there is a discussion about "H"-pipes on an EcoBoost, that is a V-6, V-8 issue.
We have a SINGLE in, DUAL out resonator, an "H", "X" pipe would do nothing but add weight, complexity and cost.

I noticed a significant difference in sounds between my stock Roush axle-back and then doing the MRT Y pipe resonator delete.
