I have a 2020 Mustang GT premium which claims to have 9 speakers and an amplifier. It's not horrible, but it certainly isn't great. Leaving the Sync head unit alone, what can be done to improve the sound? Just replace the 6.5" speakers in the door bottoms and the rear decklid? Where is the factory "amp" located?

In the audio forum there are two good threads. There's a fairly easy way to replace the subwoofer in the trunk that really makes things better.

The second thing is to disable the center channel speaker above the radio. I found that helped immensely.

Of the many ways others have gone about it I began by replacing all the drivers with better units and ditching that center speaker. Huge improvement. The factory amp btw is in the drivers footwell forward of the hood release.

Do you have to take apart the dash to do this? I am assuming yes?

You only have to remove the front silver panel that goes around your vents + the little middle vent cover on the dash right above it.

If you get the plastic prying tools for trim from amazon for like $8 for a set, you will have no issues if you gently pry and slowly take your time. Careful to not let any clips fall into the dash as you remove it. It's easier than it sounds, there are some great tutorials on YouTube showing it.

I just recommend the trim tools like these https://www.amazon.com/MICTUNING-Re...rim+Panel+Removal+Tools&qid=1622833869&sr=8-7

If you have a PP1 car with the dash gauges, you don't even need to remove the top dash grille. Reach in and unplug the speaker.

That spare tire wheel well cries for a fibreglass enclosure with a shallow mount sub, doesn't it? :D
There are some companies that sell premade boxes that would fit in the wheel well, too. Ground Zero, Eton and Audison come to my mind.

https://www.ground-zero-audio.com/en/produkt/gzcs-10sub/
https://www.eton-gmbh.com/produkte/car-hifi/gehaeuse-subwoofer/product/res-10-p/

https://www.audison.eu/products/apbx-10-s4s/

With one of these you wouldn't even loose a single liter of trunk space and get better bass than with the standard shaker or B&O sub.

Or you let Mark from Caraudiofabrication make a specific blueprint for your sub and needs like i did. ;)

Do some 9 speaker systems come with the subwoofer and some don't? Mine doesn't have the woofer and it is seriously lacking any base.

301A package (9spkr) does not come with any subwoofer.

Aftermarket sub is the way to go.

So this should make it sound much better?

1. aftermarket sub
2. disable center speaker
3. Something in forscan to remove bass limiting?

It's been over 25 years since I was in the stereo scene. I don't need something to rattle the car like I had as a teenager. I already lost a little hearing from that stupid shit. lol I just want the car to have good bass and a full sounding system. The current system sounds pathetic compared to other car manufacturers.

That's a good start. Then you can upgrade the tweeters later on if you want a further improvement. The door mid-bass driver is actually not that bad at lower volumes.
Or go all in and just upgrade everything at the same time you install the sub.
For your sub amp, look for one that has "high level inputs" and tap into the rear speaker wires to grab your signal (Forscan must be done for this to work well). This will make the install much simpler.

It seems like it would be very easy for Ford to put a software setting in the audio options to allow the owner to turn the center speaker on or off as desired. I don't understand why they don't do this, but then again, half the decisions Ford makes are not the decisions I would make.
