I put everything back to stock including the stock tune and took it to the dealer didn't tell them anything other then it blew up. They called me next day and said they seen it was tuned by looking in the data stored in the ecu. They said it wasn't them that denied the warranty it was Ford corporate that did after reviewing the data sent from my ecu.

So stupid question...now that you have a new motor, does the ECU still show that there was a tune or is that reset somehow?

New motor so it's like everything starts new again (new warranty) but if you tune again its voided. I still did all my mods again and I am taking it farther then I had it before, if it's blows this time I will build the motor.

What system did you use to tune it? I'm guessing Cobb since Adam did the work?

Yes I believe lspi was the cause of my motor blowing up but we really never can be sure what exactly happened.

Well, I never mentioned that we over looked any aftermarket components where I am the shop foreman at. Just mentioned that we carefully look at every instance and component the way it should be looked at. obviously an intake, an intercooler, exhaust is not going to cause engine failures.
If the tune is incorrect and is making the car run lean there are some signs that can be traced and blamed on the tune. You guys have to be aware that once it gets modified and more power is being made, you guys run the risks too.

Just so you guys are aware, there are confirmed Ford employees on this forum. Also on the facebook groups. I have removed 3 of them from my group already after finding out who they worked for and their intentions.

It is best to document any issues privately, or at least wait until after any issues are resolved/declined.

Exactly! I even wrote a post about getting pms asking me where I took my car for service to get my turbo replaced. I did not reply, and I suggest anyone do the same. Doesn't help you, doesn't help the ecoboost community.

What I find strange is that this engine blew at 27K. Certainly it was pushed to some limit prior and survived. I would think if there was a part design flaw it would have showed earlier. Perhaps Ford understands there is a problem and maybe sympathetic with our problem in the future.
As more and more engines blow and get covered under warranty the more ammo I have when I go back to Ford and ask for my $6300 back!

Added my comments in red. Thanks for posting all this Adam!

1.) Failures always happen in cylinder #3. I have yet to read about an engine failure that had damage to any other cylinder (except this one here, which was unique all on its own and I doubt it was diagnosed correctly from the tech as he mentioned the turbo was damaged and the turbo favors cylinder #2 and #3)

Mine was cylinder #2

7.) Very few have been reported in lower gears, the ones that have were after the car downshifted, or the car just shifted into the next gear (1st to 2nd) and the driver instantly floored it

Here is how mine went down. I was stopped at a red light, it turned green and when I went to accelerate I got no response. So I gave it more gas and it suddenly took off. I went from 1st, to 2nd and then into 3rd. Right after I went into 3rd gear is when the rod broke loose and made all the terrible noises and smoke screened the cars behind me.

Was only one person on here that i know of that got lucky enough to have that happen. The dealer seems to play a huge part in whether or not it may be covered which is bs.

I know of another one not on the forum. When I started contacting people when mine blew I was told of the larger scope of others having issues. One of the first calls I made was to Lyle Sturgis down at Tindol Roush Ford. I contacted him because I knew he had the JMS modules on his EcoBoost as well. I called to kind of warn him that if he had an issue Ford could give him a problem with the modules.

He then put me in touch with the guys at Roush Yates. I talked to one of them and they told me about a customer that had the exact same issue as me. That guy had a CAI and both JMS modules. Ford honored his warranty and gave him a new engine through Tindol Ford. His original engine was a 2014 build. I tried to get more information from them about that but the dealership was unwilling to help me. I'm not their customer so I understand that and stopped pursuing it, I did pester them quite a bit though. The guy at Roush Yates also told me something that I had heard already from MRT and that is these engines were blowing up in stock form. MRT had the engine in their SEMA car (2014 build) blow at the track, cylinder #2. No warranty there though because of how they get the cars.

So with all that said and what we've learned now over the last 4 month it's pretty easy to point to the 2014 engines as being the problem here. My new engine is running well so far and I hope it continues that way. It would be really nice to know what changed and what the cut off build date is on the motors. I think a lot of people would feel better knowing if they're in the clear or not.

My car has a 10/14 build date. Engine blew at 12000 miles.
