Anyone have insight on the difference that justifies the price gap?

One kit is just hardened bolts the other is longer bolts that replace the shorter bolts.

I have the 12.9 Steeda through bolt kit ($124 ones) on my car. I believe they’re made in house and not just purchased off of a shelf somewhere.

I VERY much doubt Steeda owns a screw machine. Far more probable they contract with an outfit for small batch runs. Typical minimum order for decent prices is 50,000 units so...

The through bolts are the stronger option.

I needed some 4 inch 12.9 bolts recently, they were 35 each from fastenall. Nothing is cheap anymore.

If we were pulling the threads out of the diff I would understand the reason for the through bolt kit but we’re shearing them and those 2 kits are the same diameter, correct? The description on the through bolt kit says they are as strong as 12.9 hardware so I’m not seeing the added benefit.

It was an incredible piss poor design. A thru bolt by definition is bigger diameter.

So the steeda through bolt kit requires the threads to be drilled out?

yes. But dicking around with fastners are just dumb. Fix the PROBLEM - freedom of movement. Rip and replace all voided bushings. If you want LOUD get aluminum or delrin, if you want quiet get the Whiteline.

Yes

If we were pulling the threads out of the diff I would understand the reason for the through bolt kit but we’re shearing them
The through bolt puts the shear on the shank of the bolt. The other design puts the shear forces on the threaded part of the bolt. The threaded part is weakest.

Guys quit buying these ridiculously priced upgraded bolts from these guys and measure or take old bolts to Fastenal or similar hardware store and buy them yourself or order online. You’ll pay 15% of what you’d pay at BMR, Steeda or the likes and have the option of whatever strength bolt your heart desires.

Or just buy the 1mm collars to resize the bushing hole. Though frankly every s550 owner should join a class action to buy Ford engineering a set of calipers and a 3d printed example of what a 14mm hole vs a 16mm hole looks like and which one fits best with a 14mm bolt shank.

They probably started with the notion of using a stepped bolt but then some beancounter or intern changed the bolt and didn't bother to tell anyone.
