Greetings everyone,

I offer this post as a cautionary tale to those of you that may be considering modifying your Mustang in some way, shape or form.

Three weeks ago, I was driving home from work when I felt a hesitation while passing a car (similar to when you hit redline and the engine cuts but I wasn't anywhere near redline). I didn't immediately think anything of it, but about a mile or two up the road, the engine started making an odd noise and smoke started pouring out the back of the car (think 007 movie car).

I limped in to a parking lot to assess the situation. The car had oil all down the passenger side and no oil in the engine. I called Ford Roadside assistance who dispatched a flatbed. 3 hours later they showed up and took the car to the dealership. Since it was almost 10pm when they got it, I didn't expect to hear much til the next day. The service department called me the next day and said they probably wouldn't be able to look at it til the following Monday, but if I needed a car, I could come get a rental from them which I did.

On Monday, they said they had sent it to Ford for authorization to order a new engine under warranty. I asked what that entailed and how long it would take and they told me they send in the ECU data on the vehicle as part of the process and it would hopefully only be a few days. I was relieved I hadn't gone ahead with ordering the tune I'd been looking at as I most likely would have been screwed.

Fast forward to last Thursday and I got the call that the car was not only ready, they had it completely detailed for me since it had been sitting in the garage collecting dust for three weeks (in addition to the oil that was all over the car). When I picked it up, the service manager handed me the warranty paperwork showing $6800 worth of work (new engine, turbo, etc). He mentioned again that I was lucky the car wasn't modified in any way.

If you have been on the fence about modding or tuning your Mustang, I would humbly suggest you do not at least until the warranty is up. I have seen examples of others on this forum who had to pay out of pocket and it simply isn't worth the risk (again in my humble opinion).

They already do an ECU check, OBD2 ECU's count the time of reflashes, manufacturer keeps tabs on how many times its been flashed by them. Its just like any other ford motor though luck of the draw. I blew two stock Mazdaspeed3 motors, third one was good no matter the abuse with nearly 100k before selling it. While the first engine went out at less then 4k and second one less then 15k. Realistically the four cylinder engines from the factory was not intended for hard driving just MPG's and city cruising but when built up with the right mods its a beast of an engine. Just going to need a lot of internal work first.

This. After I read that thread about Low Speed Pre Ignition I am now more careful when I decide to give it half or more throttle or passing someone on the freeway. I make sure I'm at about 2500RPM or a couple gears down (if im on the freeway passing someone) before giving it half throttle or more. I also no longer floor it in 6th or 5th.

Does this have anything to do with the ecoboost fire risk recall?

Need more info. What did Ford determine to be the cause? What octane, what speed, what gear.

Does this have anything to do with the ecoboost fire risk recall?
No that is just some heat shielding added to the underneath of the car. Nothing to do with blown engines.

I have run 93 octane in the car since day 1. Car had 12k miles on it when the engine went. I was probably going about 60 in fifth gear at the time.

Three days before this happened, I took the car in because the AC wasn't working on the drivers side. At the same time, they performed the fire risk recall which required the fuel tank to be dropped. Not sure what else they would have done as part of that. I asked when I picked it up if they had any idea what happened and they said they didn't look too closely at it as their main concern was getting me back on the road.

On the one hand, I'm really not too concerned as the car is halfway through a three year lease so I'll more than likely dump it before it's out of warranty. I was however thinking about keeping it for my son, but I doubt I'll do that now.

Look at that, I diagnosed the problem. The car makes too much torque to accelerate in that high of a gear. This has been discussed at length in the EB section. Education is key.

I hope you are kidding? A mass produced stock motor should not "blow" if you decide to floor it in 5th gear at 60 mph...If this really is a "known issue" that is pretty sad if you ask me. :ford:
