Been reading some threads on this and I was wondering if there was something we could do to help prevent this ie upgrading the grounds on the vehicle? Not sure if the issue is just poor quality aluminum or if its do to electrical grounding. I don't even know if it would be possible to prevent but I would like to take every precaution I can.

I think it's more of a manufacturing problem. The aluminum and steel panels were not separated from each other correctly, and/or there is contamination between them during manufacturing that causes corrosion to start.

You can't really prevent it because unlike regular rust in iron and steel, this is galvanic corrosion from embedded iron/steel particles in the aluminum. It happens internally, under the paint. No matter what you do, you can't really fix it without getting a part without the contaminants in the aluminum.

This is why simply sanding and repainting the area is only a temporary fix as some on here have found out.

I actually had this issue on the trunk on my Mustang. I've never seen anyone else on here have it on the trunk though.
