Afraid to Mod

I am afraid to mod my car.
I am afraid that after modding, it will not turn out the way I imagine in my mind.
For example, squeaks, rattles, vibrations will start to make their appearance.

Currently, my 2016 Base GT 6 Speed, is a dream to drive. I just love the way it feels and looks. Only have the Black Accent Package on it. I don’t race or go to the track. For me, just cruising around is bliss or going on a long drive.

But would love to have the following:

- Fatter Rims – Probably MMR 350 (love my current rims just wish they were wider)
- GT350 Rear – The Valence upgrade with exhaust and Track Package Spoiler (Yes I know I would need to upgrade to the premium bumper to do this)
- Ford Racing Street Handling Package (Probably don’t need to go the Tracking Handling Package route)
- OEM Audio upgrade with genuine Sync 3 unit (I know it’s very expensive route)
- Eventually the Ford Racing Performance Package upgrade for the engine. The 2nd package which includes the GT350 CAI and Tune (Seems like the only way to get a CA Approved CAI since it is claimed to be 50 state legal)

These are the 5 major upgrades I would love to do but am afraid that things would not be as great as I am imagining them to be.

Wish I could hear the exhaust in person and experience how the street handling package feels before upgrading.

I pretty much want only Ford Parts installed and the look to mimic a GT350 as much as I can.

Only the wheels would have to be aftermarket since trying to get OEM would be crazy expensive.

Well what do you guys think? Being too paranoid? Just bite the bullet and start the modding or maybe after the warranty expires?

Can people with the parts that I mentioned that actually have them on their mustang chime in and tell me how they like it or don’t like?

If it's already bothering you personally I wouldn't do it. At least wait until your warranty is over. I feel like it's harder to enjoy a modded car because you are always under paranoia when you hear/feel shit. You worry about if something goes wrong will the warranty claim be denied, etc. I would stick to basic modifications that typically are really hard to prove they caused any sort of drivetrain failure.

Wheels, catback exhaust, springs, cosmetic (emblems, grills, tint etc) simple suspension upgrades shouldn't be a big deal. For me it's when you start messing the fueling/air flow/pulleys and bolting things in the engine bay. However, we can't call it. Some people can run every bolt on you can buy and do not have issues then there could be that one guy that just ran a tune and intake and the engine went out and Ford said it was his fault and they aren't going to cover it.

I think a GT with PP is a great car to enjoy for quite some time without the needs to really dig into modifications. Do you really need a street car with more than 435hp? Not many do. It makes more sense if you're into racing and usually you know the costs of it if you are.

Get quality parts and qualified shops to do the installs(lots of them on this board) and you'll be ok. If you are OCD about the warranty, just install an air freshener and your are done!

After 36 months, then you start modding.

My motto is don't install any part you can't reverse back ... of course you'll lose $ on re-sale of that same part if you bought it new but it's the risk you take.

Jay - just take your time modding and do plenty of research. The worst thing you could do is rush into modding something then not being happy with it and in the end, losing money. Like others have said, if you stick to mods you can easily reverse, you'll be fine.

I was afraid to MOD also....Then the 2nd week I had my 16GT PP someone said "It needs a small spoiler on the back". I agreed....Next week I was drilling 7 holes in the trunk of my 3 week old car. Then I was behind a 14..and all I could hear was his car. So the next week I installed an X pipe...then the following week the Pype Bomb muffler deletes!....Now I ordered the PP1 for "More power...grunt, grunt, grunt" (from the "Tool man" show I think)....Good lord!

If warranty coverage is an issue, start off with your basic bolt-ons that do not affect the engine/ECU. Change your wheels, suspension components, add exterior modifications, etc. My advice is that if you do end up changing your suspension components, always do your research on the specific item you're going to purchase, read the reviews on that item, and always buy the top of the line item (i.e. Vertical Links - buy the more expensive links with the better bushings to avoid the squeaks and other noises). Ford Racing, BMR, Steeda, etc. are all great brands.

As for the engine, if you're doing basic bolt-ons such as an intake, tune, and the like, I wouldn't worry too much about the car breaking down. Tons of people are running tunes with different intake manifolds, fuel injectors, etc. with zero issues. Of course if something happens (quite rare, imo), your warranty claim may be denied, but you can always fight it. The 5.0 is very strong!

Start off slow and enjoy the car!

None of what you want to do will cause any issues.

If you start fooling with the IRS with bushings and start installing frame bracing and replace your shifter or add a bracket... then you may start having noises.

The issue can be that the OP will dis-like it compared to stock as he's said the car "is a dream to drive. I just love the way it feels and looks." ... I've got a Borla Touring cb for sale for that exact reason. From the drivers seat, I enjoy the subtle rumble of the stock exhaust.

Ford really did do a great job on the Mustang stock.

I didn't mod my 2010 GT at all, it was used CPO (9k miles) and had a flowmaster catback on it, other than that is was all stock. It was 100% pleasurable to drive and I had zero desire to do anything to it. Sure it wasn't the fastest but it was a great car the way it was (the exhaust sounded great too).

There is nothing wrong with leaving it the way it came out of the factory.
