That's what I thought. That's just asking for trouble if something happens. Like shooting the gauge pod through your face.

The plastic A-pillars are designed to pop away from the metal body when the airbag deploys. If you don't believe me, remove one of the plastic pillars. They have a tether attached to the back to keep them from flying across the vehicle. They only move far enough to allow the airbag to deploy, then the tether stops them.
