Hey guys,

I was driving around yesterday and noticed that sometimes I hear a loud thud when I press the clutch and put it in 1st. But if I pop it back into Neutral and then right back into 1st it feels noticeably smoother and no more thud.

Its not a constant thing but it has happened every time I have driven the car.

I'm not sure if this was already addressed but I just want to see if this is normal or not.

Thanks!

Are you at a stop when this happens? OR slightly rolling? Some of these characteristics are normal for manuals. Putting it in neutral slows the synchos to a more similar speed, so there is no thud when you tried it after that. It's called double clutching.

Many posts regarding the subject and while it isnt "normal," it is prevalent in just about every Mustang between 2011-2016.

"Perfectly normal. The gearbox is a constant mesh fully engaged gearset. The thud comes from the spinning first gear synchronizer assembly and input shaft complete with clutch plate being suddenly halted by engagement with the gearcluster.

I think you'll find that no thud occurs if you press the clutch and wait a few seconds which will show it isn't clutch drag (the other possible cause which would be a fault). You can also simply touch any synchronizer set, I tend to use second gear, to stop the input shaft before selecting first. One moves the shift lever towards selecting a gear until the synchronizer is reached but then you stop and pull back, followed by your desired gear. This can also be used to prevent the clash you sometimes get selecting reverse from rest. Anyway, the gearbox is built to withstand much higher loads than that thud."

This should've been the last post in the 'THUD' thread.

I read through the long post on this and did some in vehicle testing myself. When selecting first I push the clutch in a wait a couple seconds and then shift into gear. No thud 100% of the time when I do that. If coasting while coming up to a stop light or something I do the same thing before selecting the lower gear...no thud.

I have noticed some driveline shunt in my 2015. This never occurred in my 2011s that I owned. I think it has something to do with the new IRS setup.

But "loud"? Is it actually loud or are you just saying it's loud? For instance, if you turn the radio on to a normal listening level, will you hear the noise over that? If so, maybe you have a problem. The reason I say this is because I have the noise, but it's pretty quiet and nothing has changed in the 12,000 + miles I've been driving the car. It's just a characteristic of the car. Definitely not loud though. And it's mostly a sensation that something is happening more so than a noise.

What do you mean by "driveline shunt"?

One thing I've noticed on my 2015 manual is if I coast in neutral with the windows up and everything off (radio, heater, etc) that I can sometimes hear a slight "rumbling" sound between 15 to 0 MPH. It doesn't occur every time, just sometimes, and isn't heard while coasting at speeds above 15 MPH. I thought it was dragging brakes at first, but determined with more testing that it must coming from the transmission while the drive shaft is turning while coasting. The transmission seems fine otherwise, so I'm not too concerned about this faint noise.
