More like:
Some people like to drink.
Some people like IV drips.

:D

But I see where you're going.
You say potato I say potatOH
I say tomato you say tomatOH

Or something like that. ;)

Maybe its not just me but does anyone else get sick of this auto vs. manual debate that seems to occur at EVERY car site on the interwebz?
I can say that I get sick of driving in traffic with a manual... Every car I've owned in the last 20yrs has been a manual. If I get a S550 GT, it will be a manual, but there is something to be said for running around with an automatic.

My $.02....I just love the feeling of being in a particular gear (2nd, or 3rd) driving a manual when traveling at a reasonable speed and having that instant punch you get when you hit it.
You mean like the feeling in an automatic when a big stall converter flashes when you punch it and the poor rear tires squeal in agony.

There's nothing like pressure to motivate learning something. It's relatively flat in LA right? I suggest you don't practice ahead of time. Just educate yourself on how a manual works. Take a friend who drives stick with you when you pick up your car and go for an extra long drive home? At the very least you'll have a great story. You'll stall it a few times. You'll jerk it a few times but the V8 in these cars is practically impossible to stall.
The first car my daughter drove was my '09 bullitt... Manual only. She had the basics down in 5 minutes with only a couple of "oh shit" moments for me. Now she wants a manual in every car. I learned on a manual '78 dodge colt (don't hate.. It was rear wheel drive). Manuals are more fun, but the biggest benefit I see is that I believe they actually make you a better driver over all because they force you to pay more attention to the car and therefore to what you're doing. As Grimace427 said, automatics don't require as much thought. To be clear, I'm not saying manual drivers are better than auto drivers. I just feel that as you're developing driving habits, a manual aids in developing some good ones that an automatic allows you to ignore. If you've only ever driven autos a manual will force new habits on you that you didn't need to think about before. If you were a good driver before, you'll only be better after learning a manual.

Having said all that, I really like the auto in this new mustang. I had one in a silver '11 GT. For me it's going to depend on how quickly the "manual mode" responds to inputs. I don't like the dry clutch automated manual in my focus for spirited driving. It's "stupid" for lack of a better term. But I like it for 90% of the driving I need to do.:) That is all :p

This thread scares me for the future of manual transmissions....If we are having this discussion in the heart of a big muscle car territory the lights are dimming for the future manual transmissions.

To each his own but just don't think that there will always be a manual option and don't for one second complain about the "good old days" when you can't find a manual transmission because you never supported manual transmissions while they were still around. Just because you CANT do something shouldn't mean its scary or not worth the time and effort learning to do.

Do autos go faster..yes in many instances
Has driving ever been about the numbers...Not really!
Feeling connected to the car and the road is a thing of beauty.
I hooned an old civic coming up with 80hp and it was a blast.

6 of the 8 Mustangs I've owned have been manuals. The 2 automatics I've owned have been the quickest & most consistent at the drag strip. That's a huge priority for me as I drag race a lot at our local tracks. Another priority has been rearing its ugly head lately though, as my left knee is giving me a lot of problems. Bad knee and a clutch don't make for a good combination.

When I had my '11 GT (manual trans), I taught my younger daughter to drive a stick with it. She really enjoyed learning in that car and caught on quickly.

Isn't it telling that the auto potentially won't even be available with PP? The auto also doesn't get launch control.

Driving with a clutch in traffic will always suck, but then again I'm not buying a Mustang because I want a vanilla flavored car that drives itself. If anything Ford should have stepped up put in a modern dual clutch unit. But to each his own, manual for me :)

An auto-equipped car will have no use for launch control due to the stall speed of the torque converter. It would be no different launching with traction control engaged.

What is your experience with twin-clutch transmissions? Mine is negative overall, very clunky at low speeds like a kid learning manual trans for the first time, and still the same delay from shift button actuation to actual trans shift. Sure the actual shifting is very quick, but the time from hitting the shift button to the actual shift is still very aggrivating to me when running WOT. The trans shifts faster and more accurately when left in auto mode anyway, so no benefit over a traditional automatic. If anything, the auto would be more reliable in addition to being smoother and capable of holding more power.

I've read some negative opinions about the manual and clutch for this car as well. I've read that it's easy to grind gears regularly, even for seasoned drivers. I wanted to get a manual but realistically i'm probably going to go with the auto.

There are horror stories on just about everything. Some people hate the MT-82, others have had tuning issues with the 6R80. Nothing is perfect. A fluid swap eliminates 90% of the grinding issues people complain about with the MT-82, plus most of those complaints come from cold weather which adversely affects all manual transmissions.

I've driven my friend's '08 GTI once ~10 miles. It wasn't as smooth as say, my girlfriends Corolla, but it was totally fine in traffic. The shifting times were excellent and crisp (much faster than a manual or any auto I've driven). I think the manufacturer-specific implementation of the DC is critical to how well it will actually perform in any given car. People will always have their gripes, but just about every supercar is migrating to dual clutch, it is the future. I realize the Mustang is no supercar, so maybe it would be better off with a more reliable, proven auto trans.

Also, why wouldn't you still want launch control for an auto? Maybe I'm ignorant on the details of the technology, but in addition to holding the throttle pegged I thought it was a special mode for the traction control software to give you the fastest possible launch, which would probably include some wheel slip and throttle modulation. Just holding the brake and spinning up the torque converter sounds less controlled and primitive by comparison... People will always hate on driving aids and nannys, but for a long time high-end cars with launch control have been significantly faster than their un-aided or stick-shift counterparts. I want a manual because I like to shift, not because it's the best in every way.

Autos only go faster down a drag strip. Race it around a track and see who comes out on top.

At the end of the day a manual will be more fun in every aspect of driving except stuck in traffic, even that isn't that bad seeing as clutches aren't as stiff as a porn stars **** anymore. If you are under 60 years old get the manual, you will never regret it.

I've driven manuals exclusively since 1995... and frankly I'm tired of it. Why do I need to fiddle around with that stick when all I really want is just drive and enjoy the ride? Well I don't :D
