I always hear people say they start in second since first is so short. I tried to start in 2nd a few times and it makes a shudder sound like it didn't like it. This was on flat surface too. Should I be giving it a lot more throttle or is that normal?

I did it out of curiosity. I don't mind starting in first, though if i want to stay smooth, it revs up really fast and either I go gentle and everybody passes me or I give it gas to keep up and shift right away.

Will there be any long term damage to the clutch or anything else from starting in second?

I also have 3.73 gears and it's my first stick shift. On a flat surface, I always start with 1st or if I slow to under 5 mph I downshift to 1st as well usually mountain type speed bumps. I start with 2nd if I'm on a downhill street or if I'm racing someone.

I just took it for another drive. Looks like I wasn't using enough gas. Looks like for around the neighbourhood round abouts etc. it still enjoys 1st for crawlin' around. But off the line I can see that second works too.

I have 3.55 gears, and I don't imagine yours will feel all that different.

I would just start off in 1st. Otherwise you will either have to slightly lug the engine, or spin up some more RPMs and wear the clutch a little faster.

I have the 3:55's and if I am going slightly downhill I can start in second, however I like going 1,3,5 especially in town.
