So I finally reached the point where I don't think my car should smell like it's burning anymore. I just passed 3K miles. The exhaust smells funky, obviously a burning smell. It happens whether I'm driving or idling. It's to the point where I don't like to keep my windows down because I smell it inside the car at red lights.

Update: So I drove my car a little harder than usual for about 20 minutes today. (Staying at higher RPMs, downshifting as much as possible, etc.) I got out of my car while it was still on and the smell was terrible. I was 10 feet in front of the car and I still smelt it. It was really bad. Like, if I was at a car meet and it smelt that bad, I would have been embarrassed because I don't think it's normal.

Up until now, I assumed it was something like my cats still breaking it, but I think at 3K miles everything should be normal by now. I'm going to schedule an appointment at Ford and see how much time they can waste of mine. I'm sure they will beat the hell out of my car to tell me it's "normal".

Open her up a couple of times to burn off the oils on the exhaust.
Is it coming from the exhaust or just under the car in general?

The scent only comes for the exhaust. I still get the smell whether I drive hard or baby my car.

Take a look underneath your car, it could very well be something that was on the road and caught on the exhaust. I just went through about 2 weeks of smelling burning plastic because an ice-bag was caught on my resonator. Thought my clutch was burning up or was burning oil real bad at first.

It's the smell of your manhood burning away because you got a V6.

Kidding

Had to lol

Seriously though, what kind of burning smell? Burning plastic? Burning oil? Burning rubber?
Could be anything from oil/coolant dripping on headers, to some plastic undershield mounted wrong and touching the exhaust.

Do you have access to a lift, or know anyone that does? Lift it up while it's running and carefully without burning yourself, try to sniff out what area the smell comes from at least.

Pop your hood while it's idling and see if it smells stronger under there, or if it originates somewhere else.

Nothing there. Good point though. I was hoping I would have found something :p

Check under the left and right operator pits, they can get smelly after extended high rpm useage.

But really, give it time, try to figure out exactly what you are smelling. Change gas brands too.

I had the same thing on my new GT. Only after a hard acceleration did I smell something "off" from the engine bay. I could smell it from inside the car. And from near the front of the car, with the hood closed.

Anyway, I am at 2k miles now, and I no longer smell anything.

That gives me some more hope!

I still smell it at 3500 miles. I'm going to do an oil change soon.

I almost want to compare the smell to a hair dryer on high (that metal burning smell).

I considered removing the big plastic engine cover. It is only cosmetic, but it is a big piece of plastic near the heat source. Couldn't hurt to try. Does your v6 have this?

Inspect the valve cover etc for leaks. The older V6s did have a valve cover problem.
