Very valid points John, I wasn't thinking about all of the safety and electronics on the new cars. The 427 was top of the line but had none of the modern stuff and stuff that is standard now and used to be options, like air conditioning. It definetly was a fine ride though and when we were at the pump getting Cam II there was a ricer in a WRX with big wing waiting for us to leave and use the Cam II pump who would not even look in the direction of the 427 Ford. I am sure he heard it! Had a lot of heads turning when we rode by.

[*]I agree there is some very fast older iron out there. Look at the Pure Stock Drags (yea right) cars that are turning 12's and 11's. I went to the drags back in the early and mid 60's. Even the 427 Vettes were very high 13's and the average GTO, SS396 Chevelle and 383 Mopars were lucky to break into the 14's stock. I would think my Ecoboost auto with PP would have beaten most of them. My 426 Plymouth belvedere Street Hemi ran a 13.00 at 110 MPH but only after carb and ignition work, 4.56 gears and slicks.
There was two reasons that the cars back in the 60s were not fast by today's standards;
1. As I mentioned earlier they were not as powerful as today's engines. You can take 20% to 30% off the advertised numbers to make them comparable to todays numbers.
2. Traction, tires back then just didn't provide the traction today's tires do. That 110 mph trap speed of your Hemi Belvedere would easily give you a low 12 with decent traction.

Very valid points Dave, I'll add number 3. The strip that the hemi ran on was PID outside of Pittsburgh, Pa and was built on strip mine land. Low budget and almost no track prep! I ran my Grand National powered 1984 Monte SS at Quaker City in Salem, Ohio. The track goes up hill at the end and is about 2 tenths slower than it should be. Tracks do make a big difference. I still would love to own the 427, no way I could afford it even if it was for sale. I took my Ecoboost Mustang Premium auto with PP on a 1400 mile trip. One tank all 4 lane on i-75 I got 33.6 MPG, coming back I got 32.4 calculated. Amazing considering the hemi got around 12-13 MPG,and it was a Belvedere I with rubber floor covering and NO options!
